New Mould

Got the mail; got a new mould. Lyman 311410 NIB from Hornsurgeon over on the CB site. He bought it in 2007 and never used it. On the box is a notation that it's to be used in his 7.62 x 39. I'd wager it'll work fine for light loads in my 30-30's; et al.

Never did get around to trying it in the 30-30, bought it for Ruger 30 Carbine where it was starting to show a lot of promise when the project got dropped to move 1/2 way across the country. Never got back to it, I should.

I've got two MP 4 cavity brass molds in this bullet, they are identical each with pins for Shallow HP, HP or flat point. One of the molds is a gas check design and the other is plain base. I used these molds to create the half check bullet. Quite innovative don't you think?

I take it you used a half from each mold. Judging from the parting line it's amazing how close the cavities lined up. A tribute to good workmanship done on good machinery.

Like many great inventions throughout history it was accidental. I got both molds and took them apart and gave them my usual cleaning, assembled one and put on handles, placed it in the mold oven on the hot plate while the pot heated up. Fluxed and started casting dropping them on a towel. After 4-5 pours I look down at the bullets and . . . . . o_O What the ????? Yep, had put together a half from the GC mold with a half from the PB mold. Yep, amazing halves from two different molds fit together that closely, on some you couldn't even see the parting line.
