New to me mold...

Its a Ol’timer! Lyman 457122 HP. This one is a newer “AV” suffix.

Its a loaner mold with some neglect but cavities where clean. Blocks had surface rust.

I started with a good cleaning with a tooth brush, and flush with brake kleen. Followed with a damp finger coat of mold lube. Then pre heated it on the pot as the lead heated.

I only wanted to cast a few to see what I had never having cast with a lyman HP mold before.

After the lead was ready and fluxed a few times. I cast 50-60 from a two cav mold. Then took the hp mold and hosed it down again and put it back on the pot lip. Cast another 25-30 with the other mold.

The first pour... What a nice mold! It cast beautifully right out of the gate. Not one single cull!!! I cast about a hundred fifty pcs as I can get carried away. Momma came out to see where I was and called me in it was almost 10 and 04:00 comes fast...

Bullets dropped from it @ .459.9 and this soft alloy was 333.5g. Should be about a 12-13 BHN

I have a 457191 that I shoot in my bolt 450Bushmaster. This bullet resembles that profile minus the HP. I also have a few 45/70’s but long ago settled on 400 + ^ weights. Maybe I try this one now.

Any how, this area is a lil slow moving so I thought Id ad a lil. :)

Comments welcome any info on this mold from the extensive knowledge visiting around here is appreciated.

I really like the 457122 except that mine casts right at 457. My Marlin prefers 460 and it gives a bit of leading and not so great accuracy.
Sized 452 after casting from pure lead they are amazing in sabots for inline ML. Opens a deer like nothing else.

That certainly is a fine looking bullet. Tell us more about your Bushmaster, CW, I for one have a weakness for the modern big-bore cartridges in the "sane recoil" class.

SMac, I too use a 330-ish bullet for one of my .45 Colt standard-pressure loads (700 fps from a 7.5" SAA clone) and keep a few boxes on hand. The concept was to have big wallup without the magnum-level recoil and noise when approacing downed game, particularly wild pigs.

Mine is a Ruger American Ranch rifle 16” bbl. Im not a fam of loudenboomers. So I have a magnum linear compensator in place of factory “comp”

Its remarkably accurate. Shooting everything I ever loaded for it adequately andshooting what it really likes TOUCHING!

I traded a self built H&R 454 single shot for it. Justifying it with it being able tondo same work the 454 did with repeat shots on tap. Having taken a few head of game with the 454 and dozens with the 45 Colt... I dont even load the 450 near its top preformance and ZERO WORRIES it will bring the smack down.

I bought a NOE “181” mold Last year and it shoots those bullets well. I have had a Lyman 457191 for decades and it shoots that bullet REAL well with 4227 to 1800 fps with touching bullets.

I received this koch mold as a loaner to cast bullet for a friend. He arranged the entire deal with me as the “caster”. But once I saw it and made some boolits. I was impressed and liked that its so close the the 457191 that shoots so well. I found and ordered my self this mold!!

I have had real good results with that bullet in .45-70 and .45-60 WCF and with fairly mild loads of SR4759. also tried it id .45 colt sized to .454 fill lube grooves before sizing down lead was very soft and it shot very good .

I've had one for quite a while. I wasn't as lucky as you my first time around. Third time out I made a little jig that held the HP plug in to the molten lead while the mold heated up on the hotplate. That helped A Lot !
Shot it in my Marlin 1895CB for Log Cutting. Cast of 50/50 - COWW/#2 for a sized, lubed weight of 338grs. Never recovered one so I don't know how they expanded. If they did at all.

Love the Color.

I haven't cast any Lyman HP's in more then 20yrs. Thinking about doing some this Winter after seeing yours.

I case prep and cast Cowboy Bullets for My Chiropractor. He's still the only one of My few remaining friends that shoots Cowboy. He comes over 2-3 times a year and loads ammo on my progressive.
I powder coat his bullets a light grey. I'd like to sneak a few Zombie colored bullets into his Cartridge Boxes. It'll be easy, as I inspect and box his ammo as he loads.
