New Year's day meal

Just finished a fine meal of Hoppin' John. My wife makes really good bean type soups, chili, beans and ham, and now this. For those of you that don't know what Hoppin' John is, it's black eyed peas and rice with thin cut smoked sausage. This meal is a tradition from her side of the family. On my side of the family it's some kind of cabbage or saurkraut.

Any family New Year's day meal traditions you guy want to share?

Sounds good, Keith, might have to try that out sometime.

We do a pork loin roast with black-eyed pea cream sauce every year, the sides vary.

We had pot roast. Too cold to have much desire to leave the house.
Our only tradition is to sit around, watch football, and do what feels right.

Smoked beef short ribs and chicken, rice and vegies last night.
Tonight, salad. Our salads are a meal all by themselves.
Tomorrow, ham bone and navy bean soup.

Here is shot of of slow cooker full of Hoppin' John. The recipe is included but my wife says that it should be interpreted liberally and that nothing has to be exact to be good.

we usually have shrimp.
cold shrimp, the wife's mom always had it and we usually do too.
sometimes we make garlic olives and usually some type of caught or shot game meat.
this year we had Duck, cold shrimp, dirty rice, and yeast rolls.
if we didn't have the duck it was going to be trout steaks.

Hoppin’ John looks good. I’ll have to try that. Throw a little Cajun twist to it because I are one!

That's funny, when I saw the picture my mind went straight to "Tony Chachere's". I have a favorite campfire stew recipe that involves potatoes, ramen noodles, whatchagot small game meat (rabbit is best, turtle is also excellent), a whole beer, and a healthy dose of Tony's. It's been made at various times with dried sausage, lentils, and beef jerky before as well. The key of course is paying attention to when to add what so nothing is over cooked.

Saurerkraut and country pork ribs, slow cooked with mashed potatoes with cream - oh yeah, that's fine eating. Add a side of pearl onions in cream sauce, maybe some rhubarb pie for dessert.

I add a squirt of sriracha sauce to my beans, wife can't handle hot food so she cooks without it and I add it my serving afterwards. A little Louisiana hot sauce works good too.

Traditionally, stuffed cabbage using mix of 50-50 venison and pork. Rick hates cooked cabbage so it's his loss.

I did a similar meal with Navy Beans and Ham x 3 days. That along with fried potato's and beverage of choice. I must say, the beans seem to get better the longer they set.

My wife made up a huge pot of split pea, barley and ham bone soup for New Year's Eve . I have been feeling under the weather with a nasty stomach virus so it was killing me smelling it cooking all day with out anything to eat since the morning before! Finally on New Year's Day I was able to partake in some bowls of it. Sure hit the spot with some fresh loaf bread!

We cook a Black Eyed Pea dip/soup. Not for Gringos!
It has 8 jalapeño peppers and Tabasco Sauce per two 15 oz. cans of Black Eyed Peas!
Whether it is a dip or soup depends on how much bacon drippings and corn starch you add to thicken it.
I like both, so we make a double pot, half dip, half soup.
