Newest Lee 6 cav mold

The air turned blue the time I dunked a hot $140 custom brass mould in a bucket of cold water because the tangs slipped out of both handles at once.

Well, Bill, you do live in the land of Toto, and it could be the munchkins, under the direction of the Good Witch of the East, are secretly epoxying them. ;)

Gee whiz, I never thought of that!

Maybe I should set up a game cam in the shop.

In all seriousness, Ian....how did that mold fare with the shock cooling?

Not terrible, surprisingly. IIRC the sprue plate warped. The main problem was the massive steam explosion which blew at least a gallon of water all over the place.

I have ........I don't know 6-7 sets of the handles only the last 2 were a problem right from the start and I think maybe 1-2 handles came loose but tapped back down tight without issue . I think I silly coned the trouble makers but haven't gotten to the new ones .

I examined a number of my Lee six cav mold handles yesterday. One handle was about 1/2" farther out than the others, so I tapped it on the bench two or three times, it went in, a few tugs showed it was tight.

Have a deal with Gorella Glue and Handles. Have used
it on all the handles that have come loose. Works as
advertised. Never had to use it twice.

Good to know. I have a couple Lyman handle sets that have grips that parted company with their iron parts. I will rehab those when I get a round 2 it.

I have 5 or 6 sets of mould handles that have JB Weld.
Not a single one has moved a silly micron.

The 6 cavity "Lee" style handles that I ordered with my Big Lube bullet mould are now laser cut stainless steel, the wood handles are birch, they have brass ferrules, and are glued on from the factory. The glue that is exposed looks a lot like Gorilla glue.

the only LEE set I had for quite a while was a pair I ordered from red river rick.
probably the best set of handles I own.

I got some that are taped together, glued together, pinned together probably every form of repair you can imagine.
I did throw a couple of sets of 6 cav lee handles on an order from somewhere a while back and still haven't used them.
but they have already been 2 part epoxied in place.
since we are here.
I got handles that have been ground down, drilled, bent, filed to shape, had the handles cut off.

Mine never slide off until I'm in the middle of a session, going like a house-a-fire with the mould and the pot temps in perfect harmony...I 'tap-tap-tap' with the mould mallet and keep rolling along thinking..."hmmm, I need to fix this after!"
Talking about 'forgetful'...I ain't fixed the first pair yet! I'm always distracted by trying to get them all PC'd & sized in the same day. If ever a handle falls off before I start...something might get fixed.

OS OK;
That is EXACTLY why I went through everyone of my Lee handle sets and roll pinned each and everyone of them. Now, when I get a new pair, I immediately "fix" it before I put it to work. The end result is I NEVER have to deal with a loose handle again.

Keep in mind, that "Murphy" will see that if a handle fails it will do so at the exact WORST time!

Me, I have a smile on my face...
