Have that mold in 3 cav, GC. Great bullet. With my melt, they drop right at .314, and size well down to .310. I size and lube to .313 for my old p14, and my Mosin Carbine, and .310 for my 308's. It is sort of a toss up as to wither I prefer it or the 299, that shoots equally well. As to tube mag, you can always just make it a two shooter. Adequate for MOST hunting situations. I have been shooting shart pointed hard cast bullets in an old 94 30-30 for years as a two shooter. It is important to think about what you are doing and not load a third.

Paul.

That’s a great idea... two shooter that is. I’ve got several Marlins that I could try that on. Wonder why I never thought of it?

Thanks!

Replace the magazine tube of yor 30-30 with one made from clear polycarbonate, and observe what really happens inside.

I've heard the advise not to use pointed bullets in tube magazine many times over the years. Has anyone actually tried to set off a primer in a magazine tube, or know of an actual case? I've considered loading up some 30-30's with M2 ball bullets with primers only and firing just to see the results. Problem is they might be a difficult getting them out.

I think you would need a full charge cartridge (to duplicate the actual firing impulse) in the chamber, primer only cartridges in the mag tube for a valid test.

Taofledermaus did it, but had to use 5.56 penetrator ammo in a tube so tight it was point to primer. It HAD to go off. Some calibers are ok, others not. I've done what I suggested above and based on those results I do what I do. No, I'm not going to tell you, you have to do it on your own and see what you get, and make your own decision about safety.

Keith. That's what I intended to mean.
I suspect that what Ian and fiver are eluding to is true, ie the bullet points will not line up with the primer.
I recall that one of the early foreign military rifles had a tube mag and the base of the cartridge had annular groove
that the point rested in. Can't see where that would be needed, big rim with lots of body taper.
But, there is always that once in a million chance.

I wouldn't recommend it. Bullets lined up sitting on the bench nice and calm, just sitting there, not moving. Consider being in the tube and how much movement there is under recoil and just where those points may be for the next shot. To each their own but no pointy bullets in a tube mag for me thanks.

Let's see - firing pin is hardened steel, bullet is soft lead. FTX in 30/30 is OK. LRP and flat nosed bullet - OK, even the corelok. VLD pointed? Nope.
