Normally I wouldn't consider shooting a deer with a plain base 30 cal. bullet.
However, this one at about 1,400 fps would be deadly.

It is wonderfully accurate plain base cast bullet in just about all of my .30 cal. rifles. Many of the places I hunt deer limit the shots to 40 - 70 yards.

This one reminds me of an elongated Lyman 31141 mould.
There is enough mass to penetrate and make a good exit hole.

I've got the NOE version of the Ranch Dog mold, SC311-165-RF. Wuite a bit bigger meplat than that one, just lighter. We ordered the mold as a plain base because the plan was to use it with light loads in my Grandson's Marlin youth 30-30 for training loads. I've been shooting it some in my old 308, PC'd up to 1700+ with no leading problems. Been kicking around the idea of using it in close cover for a doe tag this fall.

I wouldn't want to bet against it.

My velocity ceiling with conventional lubes with plain base .30 cal. bullets is about 1,400 fps.

A plain base bullet that weighs 150 - 170 grs. with a big deer may not have enough punch to get through the animal and make a good exit hole.

This 200 gr. bullet should do the trick however.

look at what a 357 mag is capable of and compare the numbers.
I bet the 200gr. 30 will penetrate 3 deer at 40-50 yds going 1400 fps.

mine didn’t but it cut four ribs off at the spine and the bullet fell out on the floor of my shop when I hung her. Still have the bullet on my desk.

My 405 grn HB coming out of a 45-70 @ 1350 ain't never gonna be seen again on our deer around here (same as Ben's)! But I am pushing 30s to 1800-2000 in 30-30 (and 32) and 35 207 about 1900-1950. I have no worries in my short woods.
