Not everything is bigger in Texas

Figured I'd stick this here since I didn't put up a photo of the whole deer in the lead-free bullet thread. Rifle was my Mossberg MVP Varmint 24" 5.56 x 45mm, range was 95 yards off my shooting bench, NOE 22-67 FN MX3 @ 58 grains with 88/12/.75 Bismuth/tin/antimony alloy, LBT soft blue lube, 15 grains of RX-7. Front heart shot, flop, stumble ten yards and dead. I'm guessing about 80 lbs on the hoof. His two, much larger six-point cohorts that have been hanging around my property this year are now safe from me. I wanted a little venison this year but also like having the better deer around to improve our meager local herd and didn't want to harvest the better bucks. Then this guy showed up at the wrong end of a bullet testing session.

cut with a fork tender.
judging from those legs I think you got under me by about 10-15 lbs this year.
but you got me by about 1-1/2"s of antler length.

At least neither of ours had spots.

I had to use a knife to free the backstraps because they kept trying to tear in two. Might have to try your "Thai" sweet potato recipe as a side with this one.

you get the heat just right and you won't eat them any other way.
I tend to overshoot just a hair because the heat keeps climbing after the initial taste test and the starches start taking in the capsaicin.
so shoot low real low to start.

Congrats, I passed on his twin, yesterday morning. Have at least 4 other spikes on my property. There was a three point rule, here till this season. CWD is in the next county and the rules have been relaxed to the point that anything is legal. I just can't bring myself to shoot the young ones. I still adhere to the three point rule. Passed on quite of few 4-5 points, this season. My field cams tell me there are plenty of 8 points, visiting the property, just not during the daylight hours. I'm still holding out. Modern gun season is over next Sunday. Archery runs till February 28th...................with another three day muzzle loader season, in December.

Kevin, for more on the story look here. Ian got a bit carried away on day 1 of the potential use of lead free alloys for bullet casting and hunting. Can’t fault the results.

Yes, but I had a little trouble getting the heart shot and last group on target overlayed properly. :p If the deer had only been about three inches taller.....LOL!
