The Lyman 358477 has been around a long time.
The design has a loyal following.
Lyman has dropped the 477' from their latest reloading manual.
However, the mould continues to be made by Lyman :

A lot of people are going with a lot of " custom " designs
and seem to be looking over this one .
This design may be old but it still has a lot of potential.
Mine is a 2 cavity. Drops at .3590 with clip on WW's.
Very accurate in the 38 Special and 357 Magnum.

Here it is lubed with Ben's Red and rolled in BLL, dry and ready to load :

Looks similar to the 358271, except the 271 has no crimp groove, two lube grooves. My 271 is an Ideal, makes .361.

Something else I don't hear much about is 38 WC'S, I like to shoot them as well.

like the 358091.

I can't believe they dropped the 477.
it's kind of like the Fleetwood Mac Rumors album, I figured they just sent you one when you bought your first lube-sizer [read record player].

Suppose I am a bit odd in that I have no real sense of nostalgia about moulds, guns, powders, holsters, or much else.
Now a new Accurate mould for a similar bullet would be great.
I haven’t used a Lyman mould in years.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
There's a reason I search for clean used Ideal moulds, or Lymans no newer than the 1970s. '50s Lymans are some of the best moulds made, plentiful, and are often easily identified if they still have their original packaging.

Ben, So funny you posted that today, I just got the 4 cav. of that bullet from an old caster that can't cast or shoot any longer. He said he had it for at least 20 years. I think they will harden out at about .358 even. Boy is that thing heavy compared to an Accurate mold. I also got a 4c of an old two crimp groove swc, I can't remember the number.

The 358477 and the 358495 are about the only things I cast and load in 38 and 357. I just recently picked up a 358311 just to cast up for my old Victory revolvers.

While I do not use the Lyman 358477, it does have a loyal following.
I used the RCBS 150-SWC which has a similar profile and is a great mold but the 2 cavity limit of RCBS molds drove me to the SAECO 382.

The SAECO is an outstanding mold and my 382 is a four cavity, so it's a huge improvement in production time over the 2 cavity. I like the RCBS mold but it sees almost no use these days. The SAECO drops very uniform bullets and they are consistently the correct size.
Lyman's recent quality seems to be a bit suspect and that's a shame.
I own several SAECO molds. They are not cheap and they often require a special order but they are worth the wait and every penny.

I do not have a big budget but most tools are a one time purchase and I'd rather save up and only buy it once.

I've got a single cavity Lyman 358477 that drops .3595 with my mystery lead. I use a lot of these over 3.5 grains Bullseye in a .38 Spec. case through my S&W 686. Also shoots good with 6.5 grains Unique in a .357 case. Faster than that and I go to a GC.

I started casting with a 358495 and 358477 mold. Later got a 4c '477 and 358156. They were my mainstay for many years for anything in .358.

RCBS 158 SWC GC began my casting career. Served me well. Never had a reason to change. Some don't like GC designs but I do. Especially, for high velocity handgun or carbine, loads. The RCBS plain base 158 RN gets the nod for light loads. Easy to distinguish when bulk packaged.

Oh man, I was digging in the cabinet to find a mould for Kevin and found two 477's a two cav and 4 cav. Good older moulds I don't think I've ever used. I cast up a bunch of RCBS 150 and 162's years ago and those and 40 lbs of wadcutters have kept me plinking with 38/357s when need be. I have to step up my game, I'm such a slacker.

I have a 4 cavity lyman 358477. I don't always push them as hard but it used to be if a 38 revolver wouldn't shoot 5.4 gr of unique and that bullet it just wouldn't shoot. Now days 5 gr is +P.
