The info here about the 2400 and 3031 loads is what I was looking for. It is much appreciated. I know that there are probably a lot of powders that would work, but we all know that there are some combinations that just seem to work well for one reason or another. I'll probably start with 2400, I've got several cans of it and I'm comfortable with it, I've used it in .357, 41, and .44 mag with good success.

I checked out my 458193 . A case of net dimensions being alloy/machine close but it has a crimp groove and an extra band ...... It was the least picky of the 5 bullets I've tried from 4 moulds .

Keith,
If you are looking for real thumper loads, W748 is excellent, low pressures and good velocities. Seems
less punishing recoil than 3031, plus I never got good accy with 3031 in my GG. I can push my
405 RCBS bullets to 1750 with no problems, other than a good bit of recoil. BUT, way better than
at 2100 fps! That was done once, with a firm "NOTE TO SELF: Don't do this again!" after one
five shot group. The gun will do more than I can stand.

For more gentle loads, Unique works well in the 10-15 gr range. And 2400 is nice, too.

Will need to push that one back in for the Marlin, limited LOA, as you mentioned. The cool
thing about .45-70 is that even with short barrels, it has a great expansion ratio, so even
very slow powders can do well. Keeps pressures low, launching more gently seems to be
more comfortable for me, too.

Gary,
Keith had some good comments on knurling on another thread. He got me over the
hump and knurling nicely, once I figured out that you need to use certain diameters to
get the teeth to mesh repeatedly as they run around the diameter.
