There is a whole sub-section on this site dedicated to low-velocity/low-node shooting. There is a lot of fun and accuracy to be had running "low & slow". An awful lot of mainstream reloading gets deeply involved in velocity chasing and encouragement of same. Fun is where you find it, but few of my rifle loads with castings exceed 2000 FPS.

i gotta be pretty motivated in a project rifle to go chasing high speeds with it.
I usually hang out near the 2-K area just because it leaves me the most latitude to go up or down with other projectiles.
I like to have flexibility in most of my rifles.
others? they seem to be pretty good one trick ponies.
I'm okay with that, I have more than 3 rifles.

Or I just got lucky and found a place that had one!

Got my gas checks today from Sages! Man, I wish every business sent product out so quickly!

Would anyone care to guess (or maybe you know) what velocity these bullets will stabilize in a 1-14 twist barrel?

I don't know if this is the minimum, maximum or where it might fall in between, but I'm getting 1840 fps (10-shot avg.) from a 1:14" twist CZ527 222 shooting very near 1/2" 5-shot groups at 50 yards with no apparent instability looking at the bullet holes.

The same load in a Remington 722 222 (26" bbl) was printing well under 1/2" with the same bullet and powder charge.

Experimenting with "cat-sneeze" loads, probably doing about 500 fps, I saw no signs of instability at TEN YARDS, after which the trajectory becomes problematic. I did not get to chronograph this load.

That one DOES look a whole lot like the RCBS 22-55-SP, might be a better rat-strafer with that wider flatnose too.

I have run the RCBS bullet as low as 900 FPS in the 22-250s' 1-12" twists, and they stayed point-forward. All were gas-checked, though. I don't run GC shanks checkless, period.

Am I going to be sorry I don’t have a Lee factory crimp die for the 222? I have one for my 450 bm and 223 and like them a lot.

Seagiant, that’s a good bullet! I also have such a mould, love it!

BBerguson, I don’t think you’ll miss the Lee FCD much. I also like to have such a die available, but unless loading for a tubular magazine I mostly just leave the flare on the case mouth. It works fine for me.

My Lee collet neck-die in .222 rem came with an unintended feature. It doesn’t size the entire neck. The case mouth is left untouched, making the sized necks looking already flared. Some bullet casters modify their collet dies to achieve this, mine already had this tweak :)

I don't even "iron" the light bell out of the mouth on my cases, let alone crimp. I size necks with a Lee collet neck sizer JUST ENOUGH to keep the bullet where I seated it while feeding from the magazine and into the chamber. Actually, the controlled round feed of the CZ 527 cycles empty cases through the chamber, so it's pretty gentle on my bullets.

The 722 wasn't as gentle, but then it shot better too, so you'll have to retrieve your "report card" from down-range to see what your rifle demands. I may get a factory crimp die for mine just to try it. I have one for the 357 Mag and 30/30, but haven't used either yet.
