Plain base rifle bullets are a bit more finicky than their gas-checked cousins. 'Ben's Rules' as above and elsewhere have never steered me wrong. None of my plain-based rifle bullets are under caliber .30", none of them have twists faster than 1-10", and most are 1-12" and slower.
That said, gas checked 6mm bullets have been my stand-out smallbore cast bullets in terms of accuracy.
