Plain Base 311291

My grandson is going through a lot of .30 cal. cast bullets right now.
He is shooting these in the 1150 - 1350 fps speed zone.
I'm just wasting a lot of gas checks.
I decided to remove the gas check shank from a single cav. 311291 yesterday.
They are sized .3115" , lubed and rolled in BLL and set on wax paper to dry over night.
Should make an accurate bullet.

Hmm…… a plain based bullet sized to .311 or slightly larger, a nice thick base before the first lube groove, a small charge of fast burning powder and you’ve reached Nirvana, again. Great photos thanks for sharing! Need a shooting report + photos.

Gas checks add significant cost and prep time to bullet-making. They have their place, but as time has gone on over my 40 years in this addiction sequence I am using fewer and fewer gas checks. I am also shooting fewer and fewer rounds of romping stomping velocity as well. Marie and the girls like that, a lot. The 30/30 with my 118 grain 32/20 revolver bullets running 1300 FPS is a particular favorite, they will run through 100 of those in no time at all.

1200-1300 FPS is very much a deer-harvesting velocity, if bullet weight and diameter is there. The 250 grain bullet in 38/55 has been tipping deer over for 140 years, and the 44 Magnum revolver does similar work if placed well. I was able to draw a deer tag for my local area this year (D-14), so I need to get casting with the Ian Alloy and make some deer medicine.

A plain base 30 cal. bullet of the proper design and weight at 1,200 - 1,400 fps. will kill a white tail all day long.

Of course, you still need someone with some shooting skills to place the bullet properly .

Yessir. Lyman #311041 will figure highly in this project.
I feel very fortunate to have golombed onto a 6 cavity mould of the 311041. Recently it has performed well in my Savage 11 .308 Win. with powder coated boolits. I loaded 50 up yesterday @.310 & 45 of .311 to see if there's any difference in grouping. Just for kicks I loaded up only 5/ea sans check to see what happens. Earlier experiments with my .250 Sav RCBS sans checks shot poorly.
Is it my imagination or does the RCBS 25-100 look like a miniature 311041?
