My buddy Bill ran a gun shop in the basement of his house. He had 3 labs, the mom and 2 of her kids. All 3 dogs were your typical labs, big goofs that loved everybody. When someone would come into the shop at least one of them would come downstairs to see who was there. We had a friend Danny, who owned a meat market. He did it all, including slaughter. And he normally had whatever he wore that day in the market when you saw him. Whether he walked into the shop or the house, Cassie's, one of the kids, went into guard mode. The hair on her back would stand up and she growl that growl that you knew meant business. Danny is one of the most benign humans on the planet. Always has as grin on his face and always willing to help anyone. I've only seen him angry once and that was with a true jerk that came to a shoot and made a stink because he came unprepared and expected us to change the rules to suit him. He threatened to have the shoot shut down and that was the wrong thing to say to Dan. Dan showed him the direction to the gate and told him he could go under his own power or with "assistance".

Anyway, Cassie always greeted Danny the same way and Danny would always laugh it off. One day somebody in the shop asked why she hated him so. Danny's reply was, "I suspect it is because I smell like death.".

I grew up with my folks running a boarding kennel . In all of those 10 years I think there were maybe 5 dogs that I didn't get along with until after the second chow call .

There was a regular that was always skiddish and distant she stayed about 12 days a month , Australian shepherd and probably coyote , weird that alone but with the normal Ausi stuff amplified by the yote stuff no real surprise .

The other one was a German shepherd named Smokey , he was just a straight up squirrel . He always had a bully stance and marginally aggressive posture and while not disobedient he always pushed just as far as he thought he could . Until you snapped a leash on then it was like you flipped a switch , all peace ,love , unicorns , barrel daisies , little kid snuggle puppy "are you ok you didn't pull my ears " , angel , and king of the ring .

There was one in the field once . Still don't know what the deal was but like the butcher it may have been the lingering death on my M82 field jacket . I'd been wearing it field and forest for 20 yr and don't even know how many fowl and hare had been pocketed or shoulder slung . Probably some deer and yote blood by then too . I always thought a Chessi would be a good match for my ducking around ......that one changed my mind .

Wiemerranners and Rott mutts have served me well growing up and as a grown up .

That's the key right there.
Dogs are incredible judges of human character and can do so PDQ.
I'll trust my dog's opinion of you more so than my own most of the time.
If my dog doesn't like you, we are done.
Amen! I also have a thing for dogs and most seem to know it. Only ever had a problem with a few & those was strays or ferrels.

An update.

We took Quinn to meet her new Vet. Vet guesses she is 10-12 years old but the scale says she is overweight. 110 pounds!! She will be dieting and exercising. We hope to have here down to 50-55 in about 6 months.

Be careful not to take the weight off too rapidly. That can be more detrimental to his or her health than taking the weight off too slowly.

I love dogs, especially German Shepherds! But as I have grown older I have found that the real honeymoon began when the kids left home and our German Shepherd, Kiowa passed away.

Been a bit since I have commented on Quinn. She has been with us since March, so 8 months. In that time she has had some victories and some skirmishes.

Previous owners were negligent in her care. She had massive ear infections which we were able to treat. (Victory!). She also had at least one busted tooth so she went in for some dental work and ended up with 8 less teeth! (Skirmish.). In July, she went into heat, which while a surprise, was no big deal. But in September she developed pyometra, which if not caught early is a killer. We caught it early and had her spayed to prevent reoccurrence. (Skirmish and Victory) She has lost 28 pounds so far (Victory) and loves her walks to get the mail. She very much trots everywhere and eschews the ramp I built for her! She has also gotten light enough to be able to hop onto the couch for naps! (VICTORY!!)

She gets along with Seamus and certainly has brought a lot of joy into our lives

Thanks for following Quinn and her progress.

Thanks for the update on her!
Sounds like she is very happy and content.

looks like she's gettin down to normal dog size.

Thank you! Not only is she happy and content but she makes us happy. Win/win!!

Well, she is getting closer to what a Golden bitch should be. Breed standard is +/- 60 lbs. She is 82. Maybe next fall or winter. Or, maybe never. I have no intention of stressing her, just want her wait closer to standard for a variety of reasons.

We try to keep all of our dogs at the lighter end of the scale. Easier on joints and bones and seems to promote longevity. We apply the same standards to ourselves. I am the same weight I was 30 years ago and approaching my High School wrestling weight. Herself is more of a struggle as the meds that keep her alive make it difficult to loose weight but she has lost 20 pounds this year which is a major event.

If I could weight what I boxed in college or graduated from Army AIT, I would kiss the ground! Only 52 pounds to go!

I'm not dropping 100# to see my HS graduation weight .......I was only about 4% body fat and about 1qt of water from under minimum BMI . I'm actually down about 20# so I'm happy about that and another 30 wouldn't break my heart .
