Plinking Loads

My grandson ( age 9 ) informed me he wanted to go back to the range soon and shoot. I'm in the process of fitting a youth model butt stock on my Handi, 30-30 Win. rifle for him. I got my Lee , 6 cavity, 93 gr. RN mould out this morning and cast with it. The mould makes beautiful bullets and will make a pretty good pile quickly. I sized these to .311" dia. The little bullet carries plenty of lube to the end of the barrel. I shoot 4.0 grs. of B'Eye with this bullet in 30-30 cases. It is very accurate out to 50 yards.
I figure the benefits of this one are :

  • Low recoil
  • Low muzzle blast
  • Cheap to shoot
  • Saves lead
This one will basically turn my 30-30 rifle into a 32 H&R Mag. with the load I've described. Should make a great training load for Trevor.

Doesn't take very long to make several hundred.

Do you lube both grooves? The one in your hand looks like a crimping groove ahead of the second groove. Would you post a picture of one loaded?

Those work really well. So does the 120 2R version. About 3.5 -4 grains of Titegroup and a LPP, with just enough flare left on the case mouth to scuff the chamber neck makes a nail-driver too. I tend to use one light coat of BLL for mine after dry-sizing .310", I tried lubing the grooves but for popgun stuff it shoots as well or better with BLL and it's so easy and fast, why not?

Here they are drying.
Bottom lube groove filled, then they are rolled in BLL.
Maybe this will keep him busy for awhile ?

Ought to. When he goes through that, maybe time for the first handloading lesson?

Ian,

He is very much interested in handloading right now.
At age 9, I think he may need a couple of more yrs. of maturity before starting handloading, and then he would have to be VERY closely supervised.

Ben,
We live in a world we have to teach our kids and grandkids about firearms and firearm safety. We used to have rifle shooting as kids in school and scouts, not much anymore.

I just joined a range 2 hrs from my home so I could pick up my granddaughter and take her there to learn about firearms and shooting. She lives 5 minutes from that range.

That little bullet of yours looks like a good turtle shooter too. I got a pond full of them.

Managing a turtle herd from a high river bank back in high school is how I learned Unique is position-sensitive in the .30-30 case. That's also how I learned to hold low when shooting downhill.

I still like single shots. I'm sure its because I did most of my first shooting with one. Not to mention kintuky windug.
Your doing a great job.

Well you're starting him of on the right foot that's for sure. I look back and wished I had started that young....well maybe I did, but a pellet gun is hardly a start compared to the real McCoy

We are emphasizing SAFETY ! !
On the way home, I ask him 5 questions about our safety rules, he answered all the questions flawlessly.
I think his shooting skills will improve with time, BUT we must do all of it in a super safe range safety environment.

Besides being a nice little plinking bullet for most any 30 cal. rifles it's a great little bullet to cast for the 7.62 x 25 as well. I have the two banger version that I cast bullets for my brother, he doesn't shoot his CZ-52 that much so the two cavity works just fine for my production needs.
