Fire drills? Yep.
Earthquake drills? Yep.
Nuclear bomb drills? Yep, had them, too.

Now, it's active shooter drills.

Bring back the good ol' days.

Deadly school fires are exceedingly RARE, yet we STILL prepare for them. (fire drills, fire alarms, emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, fire lanes, building codes, etc.)

AND - the use of a firearm in self-defense is also rare and YET,...... we still prepare for that.

The reason we prepare for school fires that almost never occur and the reason we prepare to use a firearm in self-defense.......IS THE SAME REASON.

Once the emergency exists, there is no time to prepare.
You cannot wait until the school fire starts to run to the store and buy a fire extinguisher, or install a fire escape where one doesn't exist. Likewise, you cannot wait for an attack to occur and then go buy a gun, load it, and use it in self-defense.

We must plan for these events, no matter how rare, ahead of the emergency.
Discussions about self-defense plans are not completely academic. It is wise to use that time BEFORE the event to plan for the possible event.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
There are a million internet "experty experts" that will hash this out until the cows come home. Fine by me, discuss, argue, hash out, shred it all to pieces. In the end, if you need a gun, REALLY need one, whatever gun you have is going to be better than nothing. I have a lovely little Asta Constable II in 380. Stupid thing shoots way better than it should and I've taken a couple of close range coyotes with it with FN cast. Done the same thing with 22 shorts out of my Smith Kit Gun. Hitting them someplace vital helps any caliber. If a 380ACP with cast is your thing, have at it! If you feel you need a 500 Mag, go for it! If you think a 30 round mag Glock 9mm is the perfect answer, good for you! Experty experts aside, I've had bullets go whizzing by me. I don't care what caliber they are, stepping out in front of one isn't on my bucket list.

I totally agree, the first rule of a gun fight is: "have a gun".
So a big part of that decision making process is, "will I actually carry this thing"?
In order for it to be even remotely useful, it has to be present. Which means it must be something you're willing to carry all the time.

After we decide what gun we will carry; we can then move onto the decision about what ammunition to put in that gun.

What ammunition you put in your gun is entirely up to you. But, you do have the luxury of time to make that informed decision before an emergency exists.

Kinda funny, son's MIL wanted a gun, tried some - she wanted 380 but can't find any ammo so 9mm is choice. Last try was a glock something in 9. Told her she could try my XDs 9. Whatever she likes. Wash brass today or cast 40? Yup, still got SPP and found some (rem) LPP - what the heck don't have a 45acp! Musta made an error sometime. 2 sleeves if somebody local needs them. Trade for SRPs?
