powder coating a ar15 upper receiver

i am putting together another upper. I have a new but blemished receiver coming. I was thinking of PC it instead of spray painting it. I have the HF pc gun so that is how I will do it.

But I have a question. Do I need to remove the anodizing from it to conduct the static to attract the pc?

Working in a gun shop, we process an incredible number of receivers. We order direct from Aero and Palmetto, as well as others, and we receive a great many lowers that were ordered directly by our customers.

One thing that was pointed out to us by both Aero and Palmetto is that “blems” are very often simply color match issues. If the anodizing of a batch of lowers comes out lighter or darker than the concurrent batch of uppers, they are sold as blemished. They can’t sell them as part of a matched set, so it’s easier to discount them and move them along

So there is a very good chance that your receiver won’t be scratched or dinged, just slightly off-color. The majority of the blems we process are exactly that, just not a color match.

airc anodizing is an electric/rust process but i can't remember which direction the electrons flow.

PC might just suck right on, or it might just bounce off and fall to the floor...LOL

It's just dyed, inert aluminum oxide in a standing rod formation after the process is done. PC sticks to lead oxide like it grew there.

These have very visible defects in the anodizing and scrapes.. But I paid $40 delivered for a complete receiver. I was thinking I would go get some black powder from harbor freight. I have a new handguard coming also. I will have to wait to see the color it is. I might just do both at the same time to match the color.

The receiver showed up today. It was not as bad as the pics showed. Or he sent a different one not shown. I think I may just leave it alone. Thanks for the offer @Kevin Stenberg but I think I will hold off.
