Think of all the new "What's the best load for .XXX?" instant gratification threads that will be appearing on that other site.

I'm surprised these newbies are buying single stage presses?
I'd think they would be buying progressive presses.

Side note, a newbie on another forum was asking about 50 cal mil surp powder usefulness in smaller cartridges, the thread veered toward duplexing...The newbie then asked how that could be setup on a progressive press, because doing that onesie style would be too time consuming.

When I started loading ~ 1974, it was pistol and as a know it all newbie I loaded to a SAAMI chart for each particular caliber. I only load for rifle these days and with the right tooling I load for my rifle(s) liking. What were some of your reloading quirks and what kind of mentoring were you afforded?

Why are you surprised they are buying single stage presses? Isn't that what all the "seasoned" reloaders advise newbies to do? In a way I always thought that was a way of off loading THEIR single stage presses. When I started it was with a progressive (Dillon 650) and never looked back. Now I have (in addition to the Dillon) a Redding T-7; and (2) RCBS rock chuckers. The Dillon sets unused for the last couple of years while I ENJOY reloading as a hobby pastime instead of a job turning out volumes of rounds.
What a hobby/sport/pastime; I love it, probably more than shooting.

All that nonsense was the prime motivator I self-exiled that other site.

The last time this craziness happened, so many newbies were buying progressive presses that the experienced reloaders were suggesting they learn to walk with a single-stage before running with a progressive.

The local Craigslist has empty (1970's and 80's) metal powder cans listed at $130, mind you there empty. Yeah I know people collect them I just thought it was funny with the Covid and election panic buying. Probably seems like a good deal to a new re-loader. It would appear that I thru away a young fortune though.

These component droughts produce some downright silly responses.

One of the actual beneficial responses to these droughts is the renewed interest in bullet casting and reloading. If a hobby field or a church congregation isn't growing in size, it is dying. The downside to the growth is that some yahoos and nerf balls among the hobby field (both new and old) put forward some truly remarkable idiot-wind recommendations and processes--like remanufacturing one's own primers using match head material.

Any of you guys got a black Pacific C press that has "PAT PEND" and "SF CAL" cast into the right side, I'm buying!

Haha. Thats kinda the mindset of many new folks. They want the end without "paying the price and learning the hows and whys first...

This newbie bought a Single Stage RCBS a couple years back. Then I bought a Lyman American 8 Turrett last year!!
Ooh I have a few progressives. But lions share of all ammo I produce comes off a single stage.

Ooh yea loaded my first rounds about '72-73 and loaded my own for myself about '78/'79.
Ya stop learning for two and only two reasons. Choice and death.
Happy Thanksgiving and may God Bless

Well stupid me!!! I gave away an RCBS single stage and a set of 223 dies to a disabled vet 4 years ago... Nope, don’t regret it all, I’d do it today if the opportunity came along. Saying this, I need to find out how he’s doing with it, haven’t heard anything in awhile.

And a question thats just me thinking out loud... Are these guys buying the presses finding any components to reload? Bullets, primers and powder is getting pretty hard to come by!

Its a knee-jerk thing by the totally ignorant in some cases. Lady at work was telling my service manager recently how her and her husband bought 9mm pistols and couldn't find much ammo to practice with so he was going to buy a reloading kit and make their own. I asked her where he was going to get bullets, powder, and primers and got a deer in the headlights look. Same story repeats itself many places.

I swear, it seems many of these folks seem to think the "reloading kits" come with supplies, and it is just like making cookies.

(Well, except for one of my former co-workers who once approached and asked if I was a reloader. When we got to talking, it turned out that she wanted to know where to buy the "stuff" to re-fill the "box-thingie" on her new pistol.)

I'm headed to a gun show tomorrow. My friends have been loading me down with last-minute shopping lists for ammo, presses, dies, primers, powder, and bullets. "Pick me up a couple hundred 9mm, willya? Here's a $20." Not sure what planet some of these folks are on, and they should know better.
