Primer Shortage, No Problem

I'm a caster, a reloader and shooter. With times like these when reloading components get hard to find and prices shoot up, I tend to hold on to loaded ammo and components and slows load development of new loads. Ugh! Right.

I am also an air gun (AG) shooter, which is perfect for when the above market conditions exist. The nice thing about AG's is they eat cast ammo great, and low cost pure lead is the allow of choice because of the it being soft.

I just finished this stock, and part of the stock build was replacing the 3000 psi aluminim air tank with a carbon fiber tank, which allows a higher fill pressure to 3600 psi.
Rifle is a .257 caliber Airforce Texan shooting cast bullets ranging from 60 grain up to 93 grain. 1:14 twist barrel. Get longer than the 93 grain and bullets are not stable with the twist rate.

I had some time today and did some shooting over the chronograph to see what kind of speed increases I would be getting.

Here are some performance numbers.

The Arsenal 85gr Spitzer weighing 86gr, are shooting at 1082 FPS / 223 FPE. At 3000 psi they shoot at 1007 FPS / 193 FPE

The Arsenal 257-92 Grain LFN are shooting at 1040 FPS/ 223 FPE

The NOE 258-75-FN HP weighing in at 72gr are shooting at 1128 FPE/ 203 FPE. I backed the power wheel off and got them down to 1090. At 1128 I was getting a sonic crack.

The a 60gr HP and 61gr FN were shooting at 1190 FPS / 190 FPE.

I am shooting tethered to an SCBA tank with regulator between the tank and rifle tank. Standard deviation on a 10 shot string is low single digits.

I am looking forward to getting to the range and trying out the extra speed!

So with the current market for ammo and reloading components it's the perfect time to also be an AG shooter.

My springer 25 caliber air rifle (RWS 52) with heavier aftermarket spring can manage almost 800 FPS with 27 grain Beeman Crow Magnum pellets. Those PCP air arms are on a whole 'nother level from my springers.

Beautiful rifle.
Did you build the stock from scratch, or get one that was semi-inlet, or was it available from the aftermarket?

Very nice rifle, Loren!
I have never shot a PCP air rifle myself. But it is quite tempting. What kind of accuracy are you getting?

Thanks, I did build the stock from scratch. It started out as a slab of laminate and a block of ebony for the grip and forearm caps.

This are with the lower OEM 3000 psi air tank.

Good shooting. I never got past the BB gun, have plenty of components for center fire. AG's don't pique my interest.

Been shooting the Blue Streak 5mm for 40+ years. Been very useful for all those small pesky critters that need thinned out off and on...
But the caliber .25 looks very useful for those next step up critters.

Nice collection cw.
I have a slight affinity towards those air powder devices too.

Once at "the Big Reno show" I scored a crossman 101 for 40 bucks.
I was just as happy with my finding as my buddy was with his finding of a g-41. Only he spent three grand more.

There is a good candidate on my shelf to get "sterioded". It's just collecting dust, along with a bunch of others in need of seals.
It is time to check and see who still has air.

I picked up my Sheridan at a garage sale for 7 bucks. The guy wanted 10 bucks, I offered to go get more money, but he declined my offer and just took the 7 bucks.

That was a pretty good day!

I never had a Sheridan of my own, but shot several belonging to friends. They all said "8 pumps max!", so I abided by their guidance. What kind of velocities do those pellets get?

Well, according to somethingorother decree by the Obama administration, all the air and water (including atmospheric moisture) belongs to the gubbermint.

I wonder if that nullifies the "rain water runoff tax" the city imposed on us.
Where was that you ask?
Why kallifornistan don't you know.
Ya gotta admit, it was clever.
