Pulling a 9mm cast bullet

I'm certain that I'm not the only person who has thought of this.
However, it may be a help to someone else if I take the time to share this idea.
When you're trying to assemble new rounds for a new 9mm automatic pistol and you're making dummy rounds for the " plunk test ", you may end up with a few rounds that you really need to pull the bullets from , remelt them and save the empty cases. How to do it is the question ? ?

Pulling cast bullet rounds from a 30-06 is a breeze.
However because of the short OAL of a 9mm loaded cast bullet round, most presses will not allow the bullet to exit the top of the press where you can get your " side cutters " on the bullet.

There is a way to do it however.

I never thought of either of those ideas.
I thought I was the only one who used side cutters to grab the bullet.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
And if you're not able to get a good bite with side cutters, being a hollow point you could drive a screw in to pull with.
Good idea Ben.

Having never thought of using a socket, I use a "specially designed" piece of wood and a piece of plastic, to pull .45 ACP cast bullets.

A great idea...I have a bunch of dummies laying around that could use some pulling.
I suppose I'm gonna need a larger socket for the Lee classic cast press, since it has a larger Dia Ram???

Probably so ? ?

Cool idea. I have extended shell holders in RCBS #10 and #16 left over from my 30 Mauser case-making days in the early 1990s, so those get called upon on the few times I have needed to pull-down 9mm ammo. Bullet-puller collets are not always successful, and I resort to the Side-Cutter Method from time to time. I am SURELY going to store the "Socket Method" in my wool-gathering memory for times that small cartridges are in need of disassembly. Many thanks, Ben!

Also instead of using a side cutter. An electricians wire stripper works good also. You use the part that cuts and strips the coating off of the wires.

I use a set of "lineman's" pliers . The flat face lays flat on top and when the doesn't work due to wrist damage , bad days , and grip strength they can be nosed down in the threads on the press and get tighter as I pull harder . The socket is a good idea ..... I guess I haven't needed to pull many ACP family cartridges down and not had a hammer tool available .
