Range Day For the Mark 1 and ME !

Yup...Ben was so happy to get out on the first 63 deg. day, I thought I would post my adventures (once again)
on one of our beautiful ,damp, 38 deg. SEMA days.

A while back I bought a couple of 03's off a friend, if you remember he was the one I asked if he had any Lyman 48's he could part with.

This 48 was attached to an early Mark 1. The gun had one of the ugliest ,but early scant stocks.
When I first tried the piece in the configuration I received it, I was quite pleasantly surprised when it shot three of my favorite bullets into 3/4" groups @ 100 yds.

OK now I knew there was some potential there.

I probably should disclose that he had the original barrel replaced with a new two grove,
he did save the original barrel and sight and included them with the gun.

I really did appreciate the way it shot but wanted something a little more appealing.

Scrounging around I came up with an early , early , fully cartouched C stock and matching hand guard.

My first attempt at dropping the action into the stock was a disaster, it rocked sideways like crazy.

I shimmed the sides of the action with paper and screwed it down hard, went to the range with the same loads that performed so well, results, I got them on the paper.

That was about two months ago, in the mean time I was trying to figure out what might be causing it to fit so poorly.

I believe I did indeed find the problem. Because the stock is so old the receiver had crushed the wood so badly that the rear tang screw bushing was keeping the action from fully bedding .

I shortened the bushing, reinstalled the action and took off for the range.

Did it work ? You decide.

This could still use one of Ben's bedding jobs.

Yes ....Jim, that 12.7 grs. of Red Dot behind any 170 gr. or heavier CB in my 30-06's shoot pretty much like that.

REALLY economical !

These are gc, are you shooting plain base @ 100 yds ?

Fiver ...thanks for the encouragement.

I have looked at the kits , looks simple enough if you follow the instructions.

Ben...I did use that load almost exclusively a couple seasons back, stopped using it cause I wanted to try slower powders, just coming back to it now.

Guess I'd be following ( if it were me :) ), my old quote of " If it isn't broke, don't be trying to fix it."

Again, that is some FINE shooting.

Ben....Words of wisdom.....however I am always struggling with " strive to do better" or "I wonder if ...."

Then again I remember you didn't bed, what was it your Tikka or Ruger 'cause it shot so well.

I suppose performance should supersede looks.....you black gun guys listening?;)

I believe you guys have already seen this ,but it is handy so I will post it again.
Another Red Dot combo, the 299 and 365 also shoot like this with Red Dot.

That group I just posted was shot with a 10x scope.
Right now, for me, paying money for a scope means I don't get to play with
different guns, my iron sight groups and scoped groups are about the same.
I will admit that scopes allow you to shoot more , especially on "off" days ( read less that optimum sun), than iron sights.
