Range Test of BDLL- a Modified Ben's Liquid Lube

I actually have 2 broaching rods ( I think that is what they are called) They both have 2 sides with gradual tapers of hardened steel. So that gives me 4 different tapers.
When I started loading .223/ 243/ and 30 cal these were my go to expanders ( & In some ways better they any neck expander I have but not as convenient ) But thety got the job done. When I was fully satisfied I could shoot those calibers with alloy bullets I made the investment in Buckshots custom m-die inserts But I can say I probably used the for a year first. So there is definitely a frugal way of getting into shooting cast bullets! Make shift tools areas good & in some ways better in my book.
Heck A pair of good needle nose pliers can expand almost any caliber I would have to call them the true universal expanding tool!

Well there are more was to skin a cat than you would ever think.
Thanks JWFilips for the insight.
Going to the range tomorrow with both rifles so will try to give you a progress report.
Thanks again,
Jon

Hope this doesn't sound stupid.....When I was getting started in casting a couple of years ago I went out and bought Odorless Mineral Spirits as one of the ingredients for my lube. I have never used it as I found the recipe for BLL ( thank you Ben ) I likely have enough Johnsons liquid no buff for years to come ( I have four cans ) , but as reloaders we tend to be hoarders, and for good reason. My question is this.....is Mineral Spirits the same as Pure Gum Turpentine?? Tried googling it, but didn't find a definitive answer

Pure gum turps is a distillate of pine tree sap Mineral spirits is a petroleum based product.
They are not the same.
Turps has the unique ability to absorb oxygen from the air which aided in the hardening of linseed oil based paints So it was a vehicle and oxidizer. Mineral spirits is a vehicle To smooth & thin Oil base paint It dosen't necessarily help in drying other then it cause the material it is mixed with to flow to a thiner coat to dry quicker

Ben, I agree with you on that statement. It does take some ingenuity though. That's one of the things that most bullet caster seem to have. The experimentation is a big part of the fun of it all and the success of over coming a problem the fruit that is the sweetest of all.

If you spill it on the floor or paint a room with oil paint ..yes
But in the quantities you use for making lube....not really..then again I'm a guy who uses it almost daily..

My luck's getting better. Wanted to try the BLL and never could find either of the liquid floor waxes. Walked into the local lumber yard and found a can of the real turps, his last one. My last try had been a mix of 50/50 JPW and LLA warmed and dip lubed like Ranch Dog does, then an overcoat of the same mix diluted with mineral spirits. Seemed to work OK but the spirits would evaporate pretty quickly from my bottle with the cap on. Can't wait to try this mix, won't have to warm it. GW

I hope bumping this thread is ok.

Anyone have further reports or experiments using this lube formula? There is a lot that is appealing about this lube. Floor wax, turps, and Lee Alox is simple and a bit old school with turps. It was a real education regarding the way turps works as a curing agent, live and learn. Room temp mixing is one of the highlights. Heck, I got two of the ingredients on the shelf and am ordering some Lee Sizer kits soon.

Be careful on the sizing kits, in the US there's been some hubbub about transporting the LLA. Last sizer kit I ordered from Midway was missing the bottle, called them and they sent a bottle gratis. I think the bottle had been omitted by Lee, not Midway, because the little strip of cellophane tape Lee always uses to hold the lid on the plastic case had not been tampered with.

The LGStores stock the small bottles at a reasonable price for testing. It will be interesting watching this shipping change as it involves cross border shipping! We also have a national supplier who handles quart cans of Alox.

There was some talk quite a while back about trying Lundmark liquid paste wax in place of Johnson's. I tried it, but think I got carried away with the wax and too stingy with the Alox. Also used the odorless "turpentine." It wasn't terrible, but wasn't as good as the old Felix. I'm tempted to take the proper steps and try it again. Has anyone else tried the Lundmark?

Glad I bought and horded the Johnsons when I did. I use Bll on every
thing I cast as an incapsulant regardless of the base lube.

Paul, that is my plan as well. So many have reported success here and elsewhere. oddly enough I need to reduce lead contact for health issue, funny hobby I got considering.

I'm glad i stocked up on JLW too. I was working with 1 can of it to start with, and by the time i realized just how good it really was, it was almost too late to get more.

I have plenty now for my needs, but i still keep an eye out for more....just in case!
