This thread led my thoughts back to one of the great unsung heroes of handgunning. Long ago I learned of the work of John Lachuk with both cast bullet design and development, especially as it pertains to the 44 Special, and the 44 magnum. I guess I just wanted to see his name brought up again, and I can unreservedly recommend his writings to anyone interested in the field. There's a lot of history that revolves around John, and his contemporaries like Ray Thompson, Gordon Boser, and the relatively unheard of Elmer Keith. Elmer got most of the press, but it was all a group effort of many people.

358156 hp, weren't they all members of the "44 Society" a group of individual exchanging thoughts and ideas about casting, reloading, shooting, ect.. What a novel idea.

Imagine the pissing matches some of those characters would have had if the internet and PC had been around 100 years ago.

44 Associates.

Any thread drift back then would have been greeted with a mass of unpunctuated text. I honestly believe that a lot of the contention back then was somewhat orchestrated. I think Keith mentioned such a thing somewhere in "Hell, I was there". Nothing I'm trying to say here should be construed as my demeaning Elmers massive contributions to hunting or shooting. You can pretty much take his writings and apply them to current needs and situations and still get the results he claimed. He did have the following, and he did get the results.

44 Associates, Yes not Society. Look at Charlie Akins writing, he made a career out of orchestrating arguing points. That said I dont think Keith liked Conner. Or vice versa.

hey,, they got some pretty good reading too.
Oh, right--it's all about the articles.

Firearms hobbyists are opinionated and often cantankerous. It goes with the territory. Many of us cut our teeth on the articles of Keith, Page, O'Connor, Skelton, and Askins. I also had the great good fortune of having mentors that took an interest in a young boy's passions for the hunt and for the tools of the hunt. They have all passed away now, and may they rest in peace. I am thankful for the their gifts--my mentors and the writers I read so voraciously.

Andrew Lambley (spelling?) Wrote an article back in the 90s about making driving bands from 3/8" tube for his 375 h&h. I think he's on this forum. Pretty sure he's andrew375 on cb.
I remember that. It seemed like he was shooting them in a 375 H&H. IIRC, the speeds were between a 375 Win and full loads. I thought it was a lot of decent application for a rifle for large game at medium ranges. Elk or Moose in the timber would be perfect. He also mentioned problems with cutting exact widths and a mini cut off saw vs tubing cutter.
