Rem 788 project

Hey folks....

You are all a bunch of enablers!!! :) After seeing the threads on the rem 788, accuracy, and everything else.... I found one at a local pawn/gun store.... It needs some wood refinish and general cleaning, but it'll be fun! Caliber is in 308.

Questions.... Scope mount recommendations??? It has a weaver on there right now.... May just leave it unless there's an issue.

My in-house 788 has a Redfield/Leupold base and rings, and has had those for at least 15 years.

My 788 has Leupold base and Warne rings. .308 as well. You like it! It's a shooter.

I have two left handed 788's a 6mm and 308. I had the 308 drilled/tapped for a second mount hole on the rear part of the receiver for a two part Buehler mounts and rings, those are gone and it now wears two part weaver bases, they work just fine. The 6mm has a Leupold Jr. one piece mount. All mounts worked well. Both of my 788's have two holes tapped on the front of the receiver and only one to the rear, from the factory.
You don't need to have the action drilled for the 4th screw when using the Leupold Jr. one piece or the two piece Weaver bases. I did it because I wanted to use the Buehler mounts.

I have five 788s (yeah I know) the first one was in 1970 for the grand total of 68.00, it's the 30-30, the rest were picked up along the way the last one being a 222, they all shoot great and I love them. The 308 had the bolt handle snapped off so I got a deal on it, the 22-250 is the only one that has what I call good glass on it ( older world class tasco), it and the 6mm Remington piled up loads of coyotes for the 25 years I worked in the oil fields (pumper), they are resting in the safe now, the 6mm always seemed to do better than the 22-250 on the quarter mile shots.

Ours is a 22-250. Don't remember what base we used. Put a vortex viper scope from midway clearance section on. Haven't shot it enough for final determination. It does show promise. I'd rather it be a 308, but I didn't get a choice when I found it in the attic. Never felt such a nice trigger on a rem factory rifle.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Weaver bases and a K10 on my 22-250. Really thinking hard on a Timney trigger. Factory trigger isn't the best.

Still stripping the old varnish off of it.... Previous owner slathered it on wood and metal. Underneath, it looks like really nice birch...

Planning on testing out an old weaver v12 on it, to see how she handles.

Still temped to try jacketed vs cast thru her... Just to see what kind of target/hunting accuracy I can get from her.

Pictures soon! :)

788 in my house is a 22-250, re-barreled in 2013 with a #3 contour Pac-Nor 24" long. MANY evil rats at 400+ yards have had their hay-eating careers ended abruptly by this rifle, with both its OEM barrel and its newer tube. 6x-18x Leup directs 55 grain BalTips very well.

Update...

Turns out the previous owner epoxied it into the stock. Heat gun and some chemical means helped with getting it out of its wooden/epoxy cage. Trying out a 4x Redfield wideview... And it seems to feel right.

Mine was a 22/250. I bought it from a friend of my little brother. He was given the rifle by his father. He fired a couple boxes but didnt like how hard the rifle functioned. Turns out it was short chambered. More Specifically short throated. And factory ammo made for pressure spikes. Sierra's 53g and H322 loaded light made for a sub moa shooter! Its stock was plain and its scope was a cheap Simmons 6-18x.

There's something special about them.... Factory trigger is super crisp, and feels better than my old 700 in 30-06. I've got a bunch of cast loads to test out of her to see how she likes them.

No doubt about THAT, Rally.

If your 22-250 by any maker is short-throated, enjoy that condition while it lasts. It won't be around for very long, if you run it toward the higher end of its performance envelope. It won't eat throats as fast as a 220 Swift run hot and fast, but will finish in the money for certain. 220 Swift/Win, 22-250/Place, 264 Win Mag/Show.
