My 10 yr. old grandson, Trevor , saw this one in the safe and announced that we really needed to take it to the range and let him run 50 rounds through it.

So the fun continues......................

By the way, this isn't a bad choice for a deer rifle here in Alabama.

I cut my deer hunting teeth on the counterpart of that rifle. I started out with a 742 woodmaster in 30-06. For the creek bottoms I grew up hunting there is no better rifle for the job. Maybe as good, but not better. Trevor could do a lot worse for a deer rifle.

Reduced charge of 4895 and a 130 gr Hornady makes a good deer load for kids. Worked for my daughter in a 308.

Ben,
I must know 25 men that deer hunt with some version of that rifle, but not one whom shoots cast bullets in theirs. Does yours shoot cast well?

In 1984 I did an out-of-state deer hunt in Michigan (Mason County). Most of the guys and gals I shared a HUGE apple orchard with used Remington autoloaders in 30-06, some had Rem slide actions, and a few had leverguns. Mine was the sole bolt rifle in the field the whole time. (BDL 700 in 308). The third day of the hunt I remarked to fellows standing around having lunch that no one seemed to use a bolt rifle. One wag stated that "We do have them back here--mostly in museums." Wiseacre.

Slide-action and self-loading rifles were almost never seen here in the deer woods until the AR-series rifles started holding sway in the hearts & minds of hunters. I know very little about the Rem auto and slide rifles, other than what Onceabull calls them--Amish machine guns. Local folkways are pretty strong influences--saltwater anglers out here eschew spinning/skirted-spool reels entirely, except for surf fishing. It is bait-casters ONLY. Whatever......

My deer hunting rifle for the open farmlands of Nebraska is a Remington 760 in 30-06 with a Weaver K-6W scope. I don't know what else a man would need.

Very well, just as good as many of my bolt actions.

Interesting info, Ben. That is more than I knew before this thread emerged. Time for some Google-fu.

If you place this bullet in the " boiler room " of a white-tail , this one always does the job.

This one is the Lyman 31141 Hp'd by Buckshot in about 2008.
A great bullet and super accurate out of my 30-30's, 308 Win, and 30-06 rifles.

My apologies for some of these photos , humidity is very high here today and my lens on my dig. camera wanted to fog............

I want this HP to offer some expansion upon entry in the deer, BUT I don't want it to be " explosive ", always good to have a good exit hole for the deer to bleed out of !

The target below was shot with my Model 7600 Remington Pump Carbine, Cal. 30-06 , 16.5 grs. of 2400 , 31141 HP, sized to .311
Wolf LR Primers.

With this load, ( if you place the bullet correctly, it will kill deer all day long )

5 rounds at 80 yards :

That will do NICELY.

There were/are all sorts of variants produced on the 7600-series platform. There were 308 caliber Patrol Rifles, which I would not have minded one bit. The Model 7615 in 223 Rem accepted AR-15 magazines of any length. There is a lot of system commonality between the Rem 870 shotgun series and the 760/7600 rifle series, and some parts interchange as well. That makes some sense in terms of training familiarity, and in image-conscious areas a Rem 7600 might be more palatable than the militaristic AR-15. But the AR-15 is not exactly an unknown quantity in citizen/public circles, having been used for 55 years now. Not my "call" to make any more, thankfully. My patience for admin mindsets was and remains quite limited.

Nice rifle, and shooting!
I have always been curious about the remington pump-action rifles. They have been imported to Norway for many years, but have never seen any wide spread use. (Not that norwegians conservative or anything, as long as it’s a boltgun from Mauser, we’re OK with it :)). It would seem to be an excellent tool for hunting in forest, or a driven hunt.

Lyman #311041 arrived kind of late to my casting party, c. 2005. It was an instant success in both 30/30 WCF and in 30-06. It is one of the several hunting bullets I cast as a soft point a la the Bruce B Method. No deer so far with these, but I did put down a very undiscerning coyote a few years ago with it. Launched at 1800 FPS, it connected at 115 yards with a 1/2" entry @ left rear ribcage about halfway up and departed with a 1-1/2" stellate exit at the right shoulder. BANG/flop.

Thanks Paul,

The rifle is a bit of a " sleeper ".
A lot of shooters don't realize how accurate a Rem. 7600 pump can be.
