Replacing a hollow base pin

Bob sent me a few moulds to play with. This one, an Ideal 358395 was missing the hollow base pin. Glen was very helpful in providing input on how the base needed to look. His included sending a few photos of his identical mould and rough measurements of the pin.
I was going to do this in a different manner but I wasn’t happy with it at all.

This is the pin to final size. The rough looking section on the base will be the part epoxied in the wood handle. Those grooves will help lock it in place. A will also drill that and the ha doe for a cross pin.

Waiting for the tap and die for attaching the retaining pin. If I had a welder I would cross drill for the pin and tack weld the back end. As is I plan to cross drill and tap the base pin and thread the end of the retaining pin. The retaining pin will then be filed to final fit.

That cavity it quite large

This one needed a new retaining screw made.
I may go back and polish the head of the screw a bit more but it works. Even has the 5-10 thou of vertical movement Lyman pins always have.

I did take a file to the screw hole on the bottom of the 457122. There was a good burr around the hole and it needed to go away to let the new screw butt against the bottom of the block.

Tap and die for retaining pin are scheduled to arrive Tuesday.

You could drill through and drive the pin through leaving both ends proud and just planish the ends over. But you have tools on the way. Good work as always!

Got the 4-40 taps and die in last week. New job is making it difficult to find time but I snuck some in tonight.
I was going to use drill rod for the cross pin but decided I don’t need the frustration of threading it. Brass is much easier to work and the pin doesn’t really carry much load.

I threaded the pin clean thru and peened it over on the backside for retention.

I think it will work well. Now to drill the know and get it glued up.

He didn’t want to spool around with what I have on hand.

Yellow pine. Stuff will split if you even look at it sideways. Be super careful drilling the hole out.

Lucky for me a hole was already drilled in the knob. Looks like pine drawer pulls?

Got it all done. Hardest part in ways was holding the knob without crushing it.

No glue, just a cross pin.

If they die, they die. It's so hard finding good knobs these days (bracing myself for the next flurry of posts:))

I can find long knobs all day long but they aren’t like the old days.

That said, I started in on the last one. Let me know if this is what you are thinking Bob.

Gonna be a massive HP but I kinda like that for a handgun bullet.
