Rock Island and the 299

So as most of you probably know I have been spending most of my time with annewly acquired Remington 700 VS in 308....

Things are going pretty well with it ...lots of 3/8 an d7/16" groups ....when I do my part....

I guess I was spending a little too much time with it and made the 03's a little jealous...
I kept on hearing those little voices saying " ah come on uncle give us a chance we can do it too!"

So I did ...I loaded up 10 rnds ( short quick session) .. 17 grs of 2400 under the NOE 314299 with a .304 nose
sized .311, Ben's Red and BLL for lubing.....off I went....

This is the one of the herd I took..... a Rock Island 03, wearing a Lyman25x LWBR scope....

I settled in and started...looked pretty good ..no first shot flier!...3 more rounds and everything still great!..everyone touching
THEN...the ever present 5th round Hail Mary shot....

OK I deserved THAT1

Things still could be good ...got 5 more... just pay attention...first three touching all right....:)
then the fourth comes ..not paying attention....
and you know what follows that....:mad::mad::mad:

So I guess if I play along this one shoots as good as the new kid...

they'll shoot.
my 03 will do that [bottom picture] with open sights at 100 yds on a regular basis.
it likes the 311041 on top of 2400 for some reason.
first and only load i tried in it, I gave up looking for another after the first day.

Loosen up and remember your "Do it my way"? I think you're trying too hard.:rolleyes:o_O;)
Frankly I can't see how you can hold the crosshairs on target with such magnification. But again, my technology is from the 70's. What do I know?:eek:;)

I don't have any problem shooting high power scopes from the bench with a good rest. Now off-hand, that's another critter altogether.

I did do it "my way..."......I did not pay atention. ...:)

25x is a little on the high side for me @100...I kinda like 16-18x....my scopes are all "period"..more or less..not great....trying to keep the dot inside that white circle. .is like watching a fly in a small bottle...just let it jumb around ..it's only 3/8" or less...

I think you're doing great. Should have seen me trying to shoot off sandbags with that new 92 I got. I think you'd have been amused a bit watching me try to shoot a tight group with full buckhorn and bead. Was squinting so bad it was goofy!:rolleyes: Hadda remember to get off the bench and into the dirt. Did better. ;)

My .02, what is your exact goal? You want a bug hole group I know. But do you have to tear up your point of aim? Put some + or - in your elevation, and carry on. Your POA goes away as you shred it and you start doing things to see it when it's half gone.
But if you want itsey bitsy groups and the dot to disappear, that is different. Remember the carnivals with the machine gun BB gun and the star, had to be no black left to win...................

One other question, how long does it take you to shoot the five shots? Buddy of mine was shooting for group, revolver, and it was a pattern. Took him less then a minute he said. Every shot is the first shot. Don't look at the blasted group look at the target. He slowed down and it came together nicely.

Quicksylver, just to clarify, your Rock Island is a 30-06, right? I have two original as issued Remington A3s and also a Remington 03. One of the A3s is a four groove. Will be casting for these old war horses a little later this summer. Will be picking your brain a little, (shouldn't hurt much, just hold still). Thanks in advance, Les

His are 30-06 for sure, he has been a great help with my 1903A3 project, even offered me a barrel (which I want) he really seems to love the 1903 platform.

Lee...anything I can do to help....these are amazing rifles to say the least...
Especially considering they were war related mass ptoduced....I aways said. You could get a commercial super something to shoot as good as these..:)
