Rockchucks

This last weekend, I went out in pursuit of rockchucks with a buddy of mine. It's still a bit early in these parts, but we did see a few. Mostly it was just a pleasant day to get out a hike around in the canyons. Mark shot one with his Gary Reeder .300 GNR (based on the cut down .30-30 case; think a .30 Herrett with a shorter neck) built on a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley. He made a very nice 80 yard head shot on him and the cast 100 grain HP at 1600 fps expanded very well.

I got one too, using my S&W Model 16 .32 H&R Mag, loaded with the new RCBS HP that Erik Ohlen recently converted for me. Mine was also about 80 yards off. Mark was spotting for me and said I hit him through the head/neck area, and we found a significant blood trail (and where the expanded bullet went into the dirt, no we weren't able to find it), but he made it down his nearby hole.

Glen, hoping to get a nice young one for the pot down in Plymouth next week. Folks are telling me they are really late coming out this year.

Well, I can tell you this -- we were in some prime rockchuck habitat from about 9am to about 2pm, and we saw a grand total of 4 during that time. Yeah, the weather needs to warm up a bit, and then they will be out and be HUNGRY! Good luck next week!

more like beef.
they are out like crazy down in the valley I seen about 50 this afternoon all along the freeway by the lava flows.
I seen about 20 right down in Pocatello last Sunday.
we have a few more weeks before they start popping up, up here.
the weather has been too spotty and windy.
I did nail one, and a ground squirrel, last week on a scouting trip.

I ate a lot of the Pa groundhogs In my life! I still like them but now that I'm up in age I can't stand the smell when cleaning them anymore!
I got a great Pa Dutch recipe that finishes it with sour cream sauce! It is yummy!

Glen. May I ask where you were? I am planning a trip down to summer lake here in Oregon in a few weeks to try for some chucks. Just got permission to hunt some private land a few weeks ago. The trick will be getting time off work. This is our busy season and I am working 56 hour weeks through the first of July.

gotta get e'm in early spring while there is still snow on the ground or the bottle flies will be on them before the bullet even exits.

they been starting to pop out a bit here and there.
I broke through some 2' snow drifts into a couple of spots this week and got 3 off the same ridge.
then went up and around that ridge and got into the little ground squirrels pretty good.
we went through about 150 rounds in 2 hours then come back out.
My BIL brought his new Girlfriend up for the weekend and she had never shot the little guy's before.

Went back out again today. It was very windy, but we still managed to do OK. My .221 Fireball did a good job with the Lyman HP Erik Ohlen made for me (1800 fps), and the .223 acquitted itself very nicely with the NOE 22-55-GCFP (2100 fps). Shots were about 100-125 yards today.

We take off at noon this Friday to head out to Christmas Valley Oregon. Sage rats and Jack Rabbits are on the agenda.
Hope to head a bit further south and hunt some chucks in the next few week as well!
