Ruger # 1 358 Win.

My grandson Trevor , Age 10 , has been anxious to shoot my Ruger # 1, 358 Win. Carbine.
JES did a wonderful job of reboring this one from a .243 Win. several yrs. ago.
A super accurate rifle. 3 groove barrel with a 1 - 14 twist. I had JES to cut the barrel to 20 inches and recrown it. Very handy walking in the woods.
I installed a 1 lb. , zero creep, zero over travel, Moyers adjustable trigger in the rifle.
A real joy to shoot.
I have some " full bore loads " that I didn't feel would be the best choice for Trevor on his 1st outing with the rifle. So, I made some reduced loads with a Lee Group Buy, RanchDog, 190 gr. , Gas Check with 10.5 grs. of Alliant Unique and a Rem. 2 1/2 pistol primer.

The next time Trevor and I go to the range, we'll take this combo.

Ben

My original plans for this bullet was to shoot it in my Ruger # 1, 357 Max., but I don't see why it wouldn't work in my 358 Win.

Beautiful rifle! The stock finish is your work, I presume?
That bullet seems like a highly effective hunting bullet. Happy shooting!

What a beautiful firearm! Plus Ruger #1's look "regal" to me anyway. I actually was at my local range several weeks back and there was a guy with a #1 in a large bore cal (I think it was 45-70), and he let me work the action a couple of times - man I loved how both "smooth" and "solid" the action felt. Simply an amazing action. Definitely one of the firearms in my bucket list ;)

An unbelievable quantity of labor hours in this butt stock and fore end.

Oh, I believe it! It shows, too. You put the cheek rest on the wrong side again, though, ruint a perfectly ambidextrous rifle ...LOL!

Absolutely stunning work Ben! Thanks for not checkering it, I love a rifle with a smooth stock, it seems to bring out the beauty of wood more to me.

The 358 Win. in my opinion is a very over looked white tail deer cartridge.
I've found it to be a real killer on deer.

Very nice looking rifle Ben.
I will disagree on checkering. Done well and minimally it is something I think enhances a rifle.
Does Ben do checkering?

Ben,
I have a problem with squirrels in my bird feeders. The ranch dog 190 with BLL and 3.0 grs. of BE dispatches them easily. It is a fun plinking round too. The birds barely take notice of the kill.

Yes, for that task, don't over look the Lee 105 SWC with your 3 grs. of B'Eye.
Would work great also.

Checkering is a whole 'nuther deal. I do one about every 6-8 years because it takes me that long to get over the memory. I had planned to do the wrist and forearm of my 1899 but the original was slick and the wood was too pretty to carve up.

I've had several people try to encourage me to checker.
For far, I have chosen to stand clear of checkering.
