Ruger American 358 Winchester

I really like that LBT.
I like its looks too. Profile is like an improved RCBS 358-200! But its not friendly with even med length throats. Its workable in this chamber but requires slightly deeper seating. Will not work in one of my Maximums (which is what I wanted it for)

I tore down the rifle. Bolt was costed with what appeared to me copper anti sleeze. Scope base was loose with oil under and on screw threads. Action screws where dry and proper snug. Trigger breaks clean @ 4.25#.

I tried all my dummies, the 280&220 where only two that wouldnt chamber. As I say, I seated deeper and deeper with the 220g. But I dont “have to” be able to shoot it in this. The 230 RD will be my top choice.

I also got the Leupold VXII 3x9 mounted in Leupold Dual Dovetail bases and low rings. Nice and low as I prefer.

Is that bolt knob going to be big enough? I sure like the desert tan. They probably figured you'd put your own scope base on it anyway and left it loose. I wish rifles that come with an A2 birdcage flash hider would come with it hand-tight only instead of cranked to 500 ft/lb to "crush" the crush washer and ruin the barrel shoulder and internal bore dimensions for those of us who might want to put a suppressor on there...straight.

Baha. Those a2 birdcages are mostly useless..
I dispize them and most sound “ accentuaters”

This KAK needs no timing and lowers perceived sound.

The knob is rubber. Just slips over knob, its Tacky and really helps alot! I have a few with longer bolts but they aint for a hunting gun whos bold dosent lock.

I didn't see a brake in the photo, was just commenting on stuff that should be left loose by the factory because the end user is likely to change it anyway. KAK makes a .358 brake? Or are you using a flash can?

Rubber makes sense, I thought it might be a big ball of Steel like the 3# Savage tacticool bolt knobs. Rubber also protects other guns in the safe rack.

This KAK is a “MAGNUM”. This is the shorter version 2.25”. Other is closer To 4” . Its new for them and the first I have tried. (I have std XL and XL SLIM models now.)
This rifle is threaded 11/16-24. Kinda bastard size. Used cause its same as 450 Bushmaster so some yaho dont thread on something that might make for a bore obstruction. :embarrassed:

Shot this Sunday to prove site in. This TAC powder sure makes a different kinda "boom". I had a couple guys walk down to see the "HOWITZER" I was shooting!!! Recoil is stought but not excessive. Velocity is 2430 ish for a 225g Sierra. Accuracy is hovering 1- 1-25". @ 100 yards 1.5" high. GTG!!

that's pretty close to what I get in the Hawkeye version with the saeco 250 gr. bullet and RL-19.
I'm of course running some slower, but not a lot slower.

I stopped with accuracy. I was shooting 4320 with OK accuracy but about 2300 fps. I wanted a lil more. My buddy had been squalin TAC TAC TAC. So I bought a pound. Everything I read said 49g. But book said 46 ish was tops. I started about 43.5 and worked up. I JUST started to see case head expansion @ 50 but accuracy was better about 48.5. Funny is the sound its quite piercing. Being a 35 nut I taylor a bullet to a caliber. I had been shooting 220 Speers exclusively in my 356's. I had a fee boxes of the 225 Partitions. But also had a few of the 225 SierrA. They was a bit "soft" in The whelens velocity from its 28" bbl. So I figured Id use them in This new 358 Winny. They do shoot well and the 100 ish fps drop might have themWorking a lil better.

My Norma Mag is my "heavy Bullet Gun". I also have a whelen with a long bbl that sends 225 Accubonds north of 2500 and under 1"!

What bullet are you shooting? The Norma likes the ORYX but the 250 Speer also shoots same same with same load of 4350. I back off top load with that too as I didnt see improent in anything but recoil. So I stopped a but shy of 2800 fps.

Kaw Vally not KAK. They work good, put one on the BO pistol. Gotta find an O ring or use blue loctite to keep it on. Or maybe some dental floss. They come loose when fastened just over finger tight - get pretty dirty inside when shooting cast. Muzzle gets pretty thick Pb coated and some in the threads. Don't know if it's the baffle or added weight but muzzle rise is reduced - as well as noise. Suspect the baffle is held in by temp shrink (press fit) as it is not staked or screwed in that I can tell.

funny this popped up tonight. Finally got around to loading up some test loads for my BLR. Loading the Speer 180 (AL deer ain't that big/tough - lol!). Not much in the way of 'pet' loads. went mid-range (2600 fps) with 4 diff powders. We shall see.

the Saeco 248.
it was the only 35 cal. rifle mold I had when I got the Hawkeye, still the only 35 cal mold I own for rifles.
once in a while I will shoot some half jackets I make for the 357 lever rifle at about 2-K or so just for the fun of it.

That 180 is a durn good bullet!!! Mighty tough too!! It can hold its own at some impressive velocities. Same for its 220g brother!
Good luck!!

Im ordering a new Boyds stock for this rifle shortly.
I believe Im going with a Prairie Hunter. But gonna have some extras this time.
Im liking this rifle allot and the stock is its downfall for all but its weight savings.

The Spike Camp I added to the 300 BO made it quite heavy feeling...

Last night I started the pillar bed process bu cutting the pillars to length. Today Ill drill the scock then further "scarify" the spacers and epoxy them in.

Once dry Ill epoxy in the bedding incerts lastly bed the front most area of the barrel.

Rifle popped out of stock without issue.
But the bolt would not open!!! ;):headbang::headbang::headbang::headscratch:

Investigation found issue quickly. I did not apply rdlease to BOLT. Rear action screw normally almost touches the bolt. Well when iy pushes a lump a epoxy it makes HARD contact!!!! The caming action is strong & popped it free then with bolt out that lil slug popped right out no harm. But its nice to see just how strong that epoxy is on a slick smooth bolt!!

I could be picky and add more to make two little spots smooth but its 100% Cosmetic.

Next I seal the inside of the stock.
