Ruger American Ranch vs Scout ...

Went by the Cabelas yesterday while running errands and decided to "handle" both the Ruger American Ranch and the Ruger Scout, both with the 16.something" barrels. The Ruger American was a little lighter for sure, but at least to me, the Ruger Scout felt much more solid, the action/bolt more beefy and strong, and better balanced than the American (which was more barrel heavy). That being said, for something like a 300blk bolt action, the Ruger American would be ideal in a light weight rifle - thinking this could be a great entry-level rifle/caliber for my daughter :)

Anyone else has compared them side by side?

I own a RAR in 300blk and the Ruger Gunsite scout rifle. The scout is a better made rifle for sure. That being said, the RAR is a handy little rifle. Mine is an older one with the crappy plastic rotary mags. The newer ones take AR mags I believe.
Both are accurate rifles. The scout is adjustable for LOP so that might benefit for your daughter. My wife really likes the scout rifle. This one is in .308
She can take out clays offhand at 75 yards more often than not with the factory peep sights.
Either one would be a good choice. You could probably buy two of the ranch rifles for the cost of the scout, but you already know this. :)

I believe the scout is built on the hawkeye [model 77] action, and the American is built on their American action [I don't know what they call it really]
for something like the 300 BO the American is perfectly fine, I have one and i really like the stock configuration, not such a fan of the plastic stuff attached to it.
but for 300$ your only getting so much 'good stuff'.

I really like the look of the Ruger scout rifle. It looks like the kind of rifle made for life-long service.

That is my impression as well. If I ever get back to the 308 caliber, it will be with one of the Ruger variants. I had the chance to put 20 rounds through one not long ago, using the OEM sights. It is a deer-taker of the first order.
