Ruger Bisley Hunter, 44 Magnum x 7.5"

NICELY FINISHED FIREARM. Grip panels fit closely, trigger is NICE, tastefully-inset model name on the topstrap. Cleaned it up, and all six throats just admit .431" pin gauge/no-go on .432". Grooves slug 2 tenths either side of .430", n=12. No thread choke felt during slugging. TALL rifling lands--.416" pin gauge is a no-go, .415" pin slides through snugly and exits the forcing cone without any more drag.

I think it might just shoot with the .431"-sized cast ammo I have on hand. Can't wait to give it a test-drive, the Tale Of The Tape says that it should do well. We shall see. I'm in love, so far.

My Bisley hunter shoots great with bullets sized .431” at that size they will snugly fit in the throats.

At .430 accuracy is not bad but I get some leading in the forcing cone and about a inch forward.

My favorite bullet for the bisley Hunter is the lee 310. With my mold the .431 sizer just barely scrapes the bullet.

Three cast bullet designs will get tested over the next few shooting sessions--the two Lymans cast at .432" (borderline miraculous, that--#429421 and #429244) and the Accurate #43-250 RNFP/GC falls out at .433".

Should be a shooter. Good luck. I have not found a Ruger yet with thread choke. It
doesn't mean that they aren't out there, just that I haven't tripped over one.

the Hunters are great guns.
I got a 41 and was looking for a 45, which caused me to pass over a couple of 44's, 2 at a really good price.
I really regret not picking one up now.

I was idling around the Ruger website last night, bouncing between it and the Gallery of Guns site. (This was the source of the Bisley Hunter 44). It seems that Ruger has another Hunter available that interests me--this a swap-cylinder 22 LR/WMR stainless with 7.5" barrel. I have been tossing around the idea of a 22 WMR hunting handgun to go with my CZ-455 Varmint in 22 WMR. Ruger lists it (KNR7H, aka #0662) as 22 LR only, while GoG gives it as a swap-cylinder. Same ID alpha-numerics for both. I doubt that the 22 LR cylinder will see any use, I have good 22 LR handguns in depth already. Gotta run this info to ground and firm up the facts.

The eyes work better 1) in the morning and 2) once I find my reading glasses. Ruger and GoG agree--it is a swap-cylinder model. This one will be next, gotta wait 30 days to DROS another gun purchase.

CZ93X62,
Found out the other day, consignment handguns are not subject to the "one in 30-days" stupidity.

I had forgotten about that quirk in the law. In this case, it would be a NIB firearm--so I assume the DROS Kabuki Theater drag sequence must be adhered to. In times past, the "1 gun per 30 days" never affected me much--it took a lot longer to gather up the gold to buy one than 30 days! :) Now having sold a bunch of things off I have had some disposable cash for quite a while. I used think it would be nice to have to worry about that 1/30 acquisition limit. In truth, it's just another PITA that Californians have to put up with in this Soviet Albania With Date Palms.

The prime directive underneath all of this is acquisition of a good 22 WMR handgun. This particular Ruger does a lot of things I like--7.5" barrel, none of those rooney-gun fiber-optic sighting ca-ca. This variant is significantly more money than the blue-steel or stainless generic Single-Sixes, or that Single-Nine 22 WMR. It is less money than the S&W Classic Model 48, and has the swap 22 LR cylinder and scope rings (as if......)
