As for recoil I played a little game with my daughter before she went turkey hunting the first time. She spent some time shooting the 12 ga with trap loads before the season. She never noticed that the shells she put in the gun in the field were longer. When a turkey was in front of her the recoil of the 3" mag load wasn't even noticed.

That said the single most important thing I ever did with her in shooting was develop trust. I never had her shoot anything I thought might bite her. I never did anything to damage that trust. If I knew it was pushing the limits I told her before hand. To this day she knows that if I say she can handle it then she trusts me. That included the cylinder of full loads in the SRH she fired offhand at 14 and the 3 rounds of 300 gr full house loads in the 375 H&H at 18.

Somehow I think Ben has that level of trust with Trevor.

Well spoken Brad.
All of my efforts so far have been in the area of :
  • Safety
  • Fundamentals
  • Confidence building
  • Allowing Trevor to have as much input into what he shoots or does not shoot as possible.
We took a .40 Auto Ruger to the range a few weeks ago.
He asked me to shoot the Ruger 1st.
After seeing it shoot, I asked him " Do you want to shoot it now ? "
He said " No ". I put the pistol away. I did not question him as to why he chose not to shoot the pistol.
I don't push him into something that he isn't comfortable with.

Hell, I dont wanna shoot a .40 either, makes my wrist joints sore in short order like nothing else does (including a host of calibers and platforms with a lot more recoil energy), it's something about the snap. Smart kid.
