As for recoil I played a little game with my daughter before she went turkey hunting the first time. She spent some time shooting the 12 ga with trap loads before the season. She never noticed that the shells she put in the gun in the field were longer. When a turkey was in front of her the recoil of the 3" mag load wasn't even noticed.
That said the single most important thing I ever did with her in shooting was develop trust. I never had her shoot anything I thought might bite her. I never did anything to damage that trust. If I knew it was pushing the limits I told her before hand. To this day she knows that if I say she can handle it then she trusts me. That included the cylinder of full loads in the SRH she fired offhand at 14 and the 3 rounds of 300 gr full house loads in the 375 H&H at 18.
Somehow I think Ben has that level of trust with Trevor.
