Has anyone tried electrolytic rust removal on steel molds. I have used it on some mschnist tools with very good results. It. Doesn’t touch solid metal and turns red rust to a fine black rust which brushes away easily with a toothbrush. The piece will re-rust quickly unless a good oil is applied as soon as it is dried. It even converts rust in bottom of a pit.

The red rust will convert by boiling in water, too, if there is no trace of oil in it. I was concerned that a total rust removal would open up the pits in the cavities too much and was hoping that leveling surfaces mechanically would leave rust in the pits as filler.
