Save $ and time on pesky Gas Checks

I bought a brass , 6 cavity, MP mould a couple of days ago.
All six cavities were of g/c design.
The bullet is working real well in my Model 788 Rem, 30-30 Win.
Today, I made an " executive decision " to plain base 3 of the cavities and leave 3 " as is ".
The removal of the g/c shank in three of the cavities went real well. I am happy with the results.
My grandson Trevor will like these in our two Rem 788 rifles ( 30-30 and 308 Win. ) .These will work great in the 1,000 - 1,300 fps speed zone.

Nice work Ben, options as to check or not to check are always a plus, it's one reason any rifle mold I get from Arsenal I always choose the 50/50 half gas check, half plain base option. I've shot quiet a few bullets designed to take a gas check with the check left off for plinking loads in the 1K to 1300 fps. range and they all seem to group well with no leading issues before or after I started powder coating.

I've been shooting plain base .30 cal. bullets in the 308 Win, 30-06, and 30-30 for over 30 years. Easy on the wallet, easy on your ears, easy on your shoulder.

You did a very nice job, those will serve you and Trevor well! I also like 50/50 combination moulds, gives you more options.
Speaking of plainbasing GC- moulds, did you know 11mm= 0,433in? An 11mm drill bit should be just about right to PB a .44cal mould (I’m about to start casting/shooting .44).

Hmmmm. 11mm is .433 inches. How about 7.9 mm reamer?

Maybe the joke is to convert it to .44 caliber?:headscratch:

I shoot more plain based than gc by far. Only thing I’m currently putting checks on is the heavy 308 loads. I’m running plain based in the 38-55 up to 1600 FPS with pc on 10-11 Bhn with no problems. Now, that load doesn’t get lots of use, much prefer a couple lighter loads for general use. I’ve also run a plain based 165 Ranch Dog in the 308 with pc in the 1600 area without problems

I have one mould with both PB and GC and it will be my last. Sorting them out after casting is a pain and trying to cast just a couple leads to wrinkles on some for me, so just more sorting.

I feel the same way about two-cavity moulds where one cavity is fitted a traditional HP spud. Most of the time I want one or the other and most moulds do better when all cavities are used.

I have a PB/GC mould for the 30/30, sorting is not a problem. Single stage press to GC so just pick one up and look at it. That is when I cull anyway.
