shrinking bump die follow up

well, i tried heating and quenching the oversize bump that i wrote about a few days ago. no joy. it never moved. so at this time i'm going to make a re-designed die; using the same parent die. i will bore out the old .4635 to a bigger size. and, make inserts that i can bore to different sizes and still use the parent die body to knock out the bumped bullets

You can also bore the die for neck-sizing bushings feom any of the major reloading die manufacturers. If you have a lathe or drill press, KeithB sells Lee-style blanks with a 3/16" pilot hole drilled all the way through which you can finish however you desire.

Ah. I made a couple of those from KeithB's Lee blanks, works great if you grind a form tool and bore the tip of the ejector to match the bullet nose. What I did was bore the whole length of the die .297" and hone it to the desired nose diameter, then make a punch with .001" total clearance to ride the whole length of the die, then used a D-reamer with a pilot of the punch diameter to ream the taper transition (nose to body), the body diameter, and entrance relief at the bottom. A threaded plug in the top of the die with a hole drilled through for a reduced-size ejector shank works as a stop, or you could thread the outside of the top of the die and use a cap of some sort.

Ian: that is exactly what i,m working with. bought some of Keith's die blanks. i'm also looking at using a Lee case mouth taper tool. they are already threaded to 5/8-18. will make individual inserts to go inside the large cavity in the die. several ways to go about this.
