Single cavity casting Friday

Running 2 or more molds is not something I've ever got the hang of or cared for. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me. I will abuse a Lee 6 hard, but do enjoy the heritage, & consistency a single offers.

I don't mind 1 & 2 cavity molds too much for rifle bullets, BUT I also am addicted to multi-cavity molds for handgun fodder.

I actually have that mold, got it in a big trade. I should try some next time I cast for the rifle. usually, I use RCBS SIL molds for that style and weight.

At large, whereabouts unknown.
I usually get slightly higher production from two double cavity moulds than I do with a similar design 4 cavity. If I end up with a two cavity mould that I really like I'll often purchase another identical mould rather than buy a 4 cavity of the same design.

Weird, huh?

I use SC moulds quite a bit. That’s what I started out with back in the mid 70’s and they work, so I keep using them. At 70 I may not be as nimble, but I still enjoy those moments in my shop pouring that silver stream.

I concur, I always enjoy watching the molten lead flow into the mold and just seconds later out pops a beautiful silver boolit.:)

Almost all of my casting gets done using two moulds at once, usually 2-cylinder models. I agree, better production and more keepers than with the 4-bangers or Lee 6-cylinder tools. Whatever works, though.

This does have its limits, though--as in the case of my three moulds in nominal 454/452-424, an Ideal one-holer marked as 454" and having the proper square lube groove and casts at .455" in unalloyed lead/252 grains. KEEPER. Next comes a .452"-marked 2-cavity edition, having smaller square lube groove and makes just at .454" in pure Pb/257 grains. #3 is most recent, .452"-marked 2-banger with rounded lube groove and barely spans .451" in pure Pb/247 grains. The single-cavity mould gets the most usage. Lyman moulds are like Duesenberg automobiles--"No two are alike".
