My buddy sent me a couple pictures of a Smith Model 29 he is selling. He asked me about the area above the cylinder latch and the plate along the hammer. We thought the "L" was for left at first..... But now we're thinking 'Lock'?? He has no 'key' for the hole if that is it.
Can one of you fellas that know Smiths.... particularly newer manufacture...29 Mt Gun.jpg29 Mt Gun2.jpg answer this for two old guys who haven't seen it? Thanks

Yes, that's a lock. I would assume that S&W would send you a key. I don't have one but have read that some folks remove or disable them somehow. I would bet they are not frequently used. I'd get the key even if I wasn't going to use that feature, might make it easier to sell.

Yep, that is the "Clinton Lock" put on when S&W was owned by a British company about 20 years ago. I think they are still made that way.

the first thing most do is throw the key away or just leave it in the box when they throw that away.
I think my 624--5? whatever it is? has that hole too.
I forgot it even has it.

You can buy a key from all the usual sources for about $5.
I'm thinking you could use a security Torx bit (the kind with the hole in the middle) instead of a key?
I have a set of security bits...I don't currently own a S&W with a internal lock, or I could check if it works.

Fortunately, I will never see the S&W lock up close and personal. Of all my S&W's, the most recent ones were made in 1981. No MIM, no lock, no 2-piece barrels; just the way I like it.
