Was riding around mowing on the hotrod tractor this weekend.Just doing "laps" with plenty of TIME to think about stupid chit.

"If" I didn't have other things to do,would fabricate "batwings" (22" U-push mower decks) with hydraulic lifts,to each side of the 72" mower deck.Understand the lifting mechanisms, don't,or haven't paid attention to how the batwing bush hogs work? But it can't be that difficult?Sliding/telescoping drive shafts prolly?

that's how they work.
I just make them run, and yell at the grounds crew.
My grounds crew doesn't tolerate yelling. She tends to feed me well so I defer to her on this.

ITS, see post #102. BTDT, works great for lawn type mowing with engine-driven mowers. You could weld a pylon on each side of the brush deck and eye-bolt, chain, etc. to the auxiliary mower decks. Batwings have a PTO divider with three output shafts and three independent deck sections, not sure if the outboard deck sections have independent lift controls but I think so because they fold up @90° for travel.

be easier to just roll in and out of a tapered spider gear set up rather than align a shaft.

So a 28 lbs bar and you can break up this "caliche"? Yes, depending on how thick it is. It's soft and breaks up pretty easy. use the spike end on the bar to fracture it. If you have the 3 ft thick layers, it's more like limestone and needs to be drilled but still pretty soft. I hate the darned clay that sticks to the shovel when wet and you can't make a dent in it when dry. Trick - wet it and wait a couple days, then dig.

Sharp augers shave caliche quite well. I drilled a bunch of holes with the aforementioned auger right after a wet spring and after I got about 2' down, I hit vanilla cake batter. It was crazy, had to pull the auger out and run it up to full speed to sling the stuff off. When the clumps and piles dried it was like mortar mix again. The problem with using clamshell diggers in caliche is like Popper said, if it's too dry. Not enough mass, they bounce right off. Break it up with the bar and dig it out with clamshell. If you're not in a hurry, start the hole down to about 6", fill it with water a few times, go back to it in a few days, dig another foot or so, and repeat.

Took pictures for guns going on GB today. Selling well, except for Rugers, they are not bringing much.

The black gumbo clay we have in some places here is worse than the vanilla pudding mix but once dry it is just as hard. Had a boss once who move here from NJ. He looked really bad one Mon. morn., I asked what happened. His wife bought a flat of plants, he couldn't get any holes dug to plant. I told him what I'd learned from experience. Hs wife had to replace the now dead flowers. The next Mon. he was a happy camper. Even beating a shovel on the ground that stuff just won't come off. Only worse time was when I was a kid, had to make holes for solotube so we could install ~50 parking lot lights. 70# jack wouldn't do the job, boss had to get me a 90# unit. When I was really young, thought it was neat watching a guy run a pnumatic tamping mule. Now I know why he took frequent breaks.

Sitting here at lunch,it just occurred we got two hydraulic cly in inventory.... doh. They are single action that came off a FEL off a retrofit 8N. Wasn't mine but,the guy gave them and said they'd come in handy.... they were headed for a dumpster. Pretty tight 1790 slackjaw house/property we did a poop ton of work on. I'd guess 1960's on the hydraulics?

Almost five years since Cindy and I were approved for Arkansas concealed carry. Today was re-certification day. Had a two hour class on the pertinent law changes and then had to shoot for qualification. If you choose to qualify with a revolver the permit is only good for three years and you can only carry a revolver. If you opt for a semi auto, then the permit is good for five years and you can carry, either or.........kind of a no brainer. We used my Ruger Mark II 22 auto loader. Never been to the range before and wasn't sure if reloads are allowed. I have two life time's supply of 22 ammo and didn't have to worry about retrieving spent brass. Another shooter brought a SS Mark III. Mine has a red dot sight, I asked the instructor if that was allowed, when I signed up for the class. Someone else qualified with a laser sight. Apparently, there are no sighting restrictions.

A change of pace for me, head to St. Louis tomorrow for 3 days of training, at least it's in a/c for a change.

It takes a lot of edjumication to fix them Fords. I got a helluva hands-on edjumication on the 1.6L ecotec timing belt/water pump a couple of weeks ago, pinch-hitting for one of the techs. The factory training is usually excellent and very worthwhile, especially if you get paid for it.

I dunno why I got up today.
let Jax out for a bit and thought the neighbors little dog sounded a little louder than normal.
well,,, dogs get a lot louder when they are right outside the window.
went outside and their big German shepherd figured it was time for him to come visit too so he finished his hole under the fence and brought me a stick to play fetch.
I was planning on stripping down the one lawn mower today and checking out the bolt holes for the engine and stem height for the blade, but after the second time they come over I had to fix another hole under the fence and had had enough.
I stopped by the insurance company and let the underwriter know I was going to pay the car insurance for a whole year this time and wanted to add the car on for 3 months so she could see what it entailed with the Ins. Co. other than writing a new policy.
then headed over to Littlegirls place to see if she needed anything from the ACE store before I went.
she needed some stuff the ACE doesn't carry so we headed down to Lowes in Pokey.
the wife and oldest girl had already headed to Pokey a few hours earlier and I told them I wasn't going anywhere let alone Pocatello [rolling my eyes]

so I end up at Lowes and was going to get some Lumber and now some Cement.
the Lumber I wanted was all trashed so I passed and we got her stuff and the cement and come home.
oh except for the smoker they had on sale...

I got to pour a bunch of cement when I got home and need about 40 more bags to finish the fence line footing, then I will form up and pour a little wall about 1-1/2" above the bottom of the fence.
I guess I better take the trailer next time.

not what I wanted to do this summer.
