Zombied through today . 2 hr left . Sleep a full 8-9 tonight chop some wood for Mom tomorrow , maybe I'll saw some 2" oak slabs tomorrow too .

Gotta fix that tire . I've never seen a valve stem just disintegrate before ......
Also how the heck do you cross thread a modern shouldered wheel stud bad enough to total the hardened stud with stock wheel nuts . I mean an 01' Ford is getting pretty close to ham fist proof ........

Don't forget the little rawhide pin to connect the laces together.

Not just rigidity you need to make good use of carbide tooling. Also, horsepower at higher spindle speeds. I suspect, in the long run, you'll find that high speed steel (HSS) or HSS/CO with 4-8% cobalt will be more serviceable. If you're having trouble with your toolbit annealing from heat, try tantalum tungsten, AKA "Tantung". Stellite is another material that has enhanced wear and heat resistance, while sharpening and resisting chipping like HSS.
You are no doubt right. I love the idea of indexable carbide tooling, so convenient! But that stuff isn't sharp like HSS tooling at all and, as you note, it does take some HP. I believe the Logan has a decent sized motor, like 3/4 hp, but I will have to play with it to see what it wants. Tubalcaine/Mr Pete on You Tube does a lot with his Logan. He's a retired machinist/shop teacher, does great videos. I've picked up a lot of ideas from him and "This Old Tony".

Looks like I am now going to have to replace the water heater in the basement. Leaking all over. I cant win.
FWIW, when you get the new one replace the drain valve at the bottom with a gate type valve. Makes getting sediment and crap out annually a lot easier which lead to a longer lasting WH.

Stand by for sticker shock too! Last one I put in set me back a few months!!!

Snow this AM, but much warmer. Heading for the woods I think. I should be able to grab several standing dead Red Oak, saw up the tops for wood for use soon and deck the trunks for splitting and drying later.

I also have to rearrange the garage. I have a wood cookstove sitting in there that I'm never going to hitch up, so that's got to go some place else. That will give me room for the lathe. I will need to move a bunch of stuff, that's for sure.

This one was put in in 98. So I cant complain it lasted that it did not last. We don't have any problems with sediment here. I have a feeling when they replaced the main water line on our block is what did it. Before we were on the last end of the line. We did not have very good water pressure. Now it is awesome.

Went to Mom's chopped up some wood .
Couldn't get the saw started at all .........50° .......
Pulled the air cleaner , washed it out with raw gas , prime , choke , pull , nada . 20 strokes it's almost like it's fuel locking ....... Yank the plug it's wet ,like dripping wet , give it a shake , and tada water balls ....... I got nothing sealed tank , sealed can , poured out grey fuel , half water . Primed the line dry , filled the tank with new dry fuel , pumped it up , few strokes to clear the barrel , plug back in ran like a champ .

Pulled down Ms flat tire ........I'll take 2 new tires just like the new pair on the back please .
I do appreciate Dad having bought the tire machine . As an added bonus I have a use for the zinc , steel , and politungsten WW .
The inside of the tire was shredded along with the brass bits separated in the stem .....

Got a new to me tool box for the truck from the boy . He scattered the engine in his truck . It's more for the short block than he gave for the truck 25,000 miles ago . I'll swap my 275-60-18s later this summer for the factory wheels and half life tires on that too .
I rotated my tires , that left front got pretty thin on the inside lugs , it leaks and I need to jack the camber out about another 1/4" on the rim top .

I didn't saw the slabs today ........just too run out from the 15 he split shift Sunday and the month old new grandson sleep over . I still have all of my 36 yr old premie skills intact , although the burrito baby swaddle skills seem a little off in the dark at 3am with the bottle , burp , fresh drawers call .
It's almost like a 3 day hangover at this point .

Baby pheromones , come on SWMBO , just let me sleep plz , I'm not 30 anymore ...... ;)

Finally got around to cleaning up workshop! I alway clutter it up with little emergency jobs that I had to fix quick and then leave everything on the tables!
My plan is at this time fo finally really clean it out and maybe start working again on my 14 gauge Flintlock fowler that I started in 2002! Just now finding the hardware that was buried over all of 20 years! Now I got to search my computers for my design plans I drew up for it in 2001. Good thing is the Barrel and tang are fully inlet ....butt is fully shaped with butt plate installed Lock & trigger plate and trigger installed and fully working!
But everything else forward is just a hunk of square& some what trimmed wood! Also found the ramrod pipes I made for it ( I was surprised how fancy I made them! ) also I found the Fancy Filagree Side plate I had in mind for it, However I may opt out on that because the masssive amount of inletting that would be required! My hands are not as steady as they were 20 years ago for that intricate work!
Also found out I over ordered the fowler trigger guard I wanted for it! Since I could not find it in all the mess, I sought out Jen Goehring recently for one of her Dad's last Brass castings..... that set me back a bit but there will never be any more cast! I was excited when I got it, but today found the original trigger guard I ordered for 1/4 the cost!
Maybe I will build another fowler or just resell it!

Paid property tax. Then took boy out for clothes and shoes yesterday, so wiped out my checking.

Told kid I would get him one "Top Branded Matching Outfit.

So... Big Difference between Kohl's and Walmart.
Kohl's.... 1 pair of joggers, and 1 sweet shirt both Champion Brand, $70.
Walmart.... 1 pair of Rebock joggers ,1 Pajama pant, 3 shirts. $55

Today early, went trudging thru snow, at the club. Went to sight in a scope on my Rossi RS-22 Rabbit-squirrel rifle. Going rabbit hunting next week with my cousin. His dog sometimes runs a bit close, or over runs,so we do not use shotguns.

Wife was sick today. The kid away, so I did all the running, salting, cleaning house, including a thorough cleaning of both bathrooms, and two sink loads of dishes. Also the cooking today.
Started getting dizzy a little bit ago, happens when I over do it. Made me appreciate all my wife does.
So calling it a night. Watching you tube and net surfing.

Finally had it with the ancient Craftsman 19 Volt Ni-Cad 6 1/2" circular to the point that I disassembled it and threw all the parts in the trash. Tomorrow, I'll made a detour to Home Depot and buy Milwaukee's M18 Li-Ion version. I'm keeping the Craftsman cordless reciprocating till the next time I need to use it, then I'll chuck it, too, and buy a Milwaukee.

Thought I was going to spend the day in the woods, ha! I forgot I had to get the muffler I cobbed together on the snowblower, change the oil in the woodsplitter and put the anti-gel juice in the new salamander AND fix the garage furnace. Did the blower first and cleared the walkway. Getting the salamander going again wasn't too hard, and then I had heat so I could pull the gun out of the furnace and put the new nozzle on. Okay, now I gots all sortsa heat. Tried starting the splitter but all it would do is fire once, never any more than that. Fine. So I pointed the salamander at the splitter and let it warm up. Pulled and pulled and pulled with the same one pop result. Why isn't it getting fuel? Off comes the carb bowl. AHA! White pus like gunk in the bottom of the bowl! Yeah boy, moisture is great on crops, not so hot in a gas engine. Got the main jet out and used my torch tip cleaners to drive the crap out of that. Put here back together and she took off with one pull in typical Honda fashion. Got-er-did.

I did make it into the woods later. Last tree I cut the old Husky 365's muffler decided it didn't want to stay where it belonged, but other than that it went well. Here's a pic of the old JD420, sans hood so I can get to stuff that's still being fine tuned, and some of that Red Oak I've been cutting. This is up on top of a ridge that's covered almost entirely with Red Oak, or was until the Tent caterpillars hit the area!

i got water heater swapping down to a science.
we get a new one every three years or so, no matter how much i clean it.
i got a little tool built to get most,,, some,,, enough anyway, of the calcium deposits out to put new elements in there and hold down the fort for another 6-7 months until they build up too much and i get tired of the cleanup and parts replacement routine.

A bit brisk here at -14F, highs of 8 predicted. Supposed to go get the new/old lathe today. This being a typical winter is making it hard for me to get things moved to where I want them. I'm going to have to come up with a plan of attack for getting some stuff, heavy iron stuff, moved around.

Yesterday, everyone stopped over for a visit ...and/or called me...at least 3 hours on the phone :(
So I got nothing done.
I didn't even get to watch the movie I had earmarked to watch "Plot against the President".
