It was 81 last night when I went to bed. 48 when I woke up at six. Typical Texas fall, happened sometime between midnight and probably 3 am, while we were sleeping.

I helped my Mom move out of her apartment...So I've been busy this week.

Just to bring anyone, who may not know, up to speed. My Dad passed in 2016. My Mom struggled a bit after her spouse of 70 yrs was gone...But she persevered. Then about 18 months ago, she fell and broke her hip and shoulder socket. After lots of therapy in a nursing home/rehab, she was able to return to her apartment about a year ago. While she had trouble doing many things, including driving, she persevered.

Now the story.
During this last year, My Uncle (Mom's Brother) and my aunt and myself would visit Mom every other weekend...it's a long drive (3 hours one way), otherwise we would have visited more often. It was about May, this year, when she decided it was time to think about assisted living. My uncle suggested that she move in with them. She wasn't sure if that was the best thing...we all had discussions about this, all summer long.

There was a practice visit, with my Mom staying with them. Mostly it went well, but my Mom, who always disliked traveling, didn't like the long drive to my Uncles house, then only to return home to her apartment a couple days later. More discussions occurred. She was on the waiting list to a assisted living place in Glencoe, they call whenever there is an opening (about once every couple months). There were always discussions after those calls.

Well, about 6 weeks ago, a decision was made, she would move into my uncles house on Oct 5th. The two visits in Sept included packing up some stuff and bring it to my uncles house. The big move came on the 5th, all went well. But there was still a lot of stuff to deal with, My whole family are packrats (myself included). We boxed up many things for donation...as well as most of her furniture. A church/charity organization was to pick everything yesterday, I was to coordinate. They only took half of the boxes, but did take all the furniture. I had to scramble yesterday to giveaway, recycle, and fill the apartment building's dumpster...I will likely have to pay for a unscheduled trash pickup? The giveaway part was a blessing and a strange story for another time (thank you "Marbles").

Anyway, I sure did a lot of driving...I didn't mind the clean out and clean up of the apartment, but it sure is a lot more taxing when those days are scattered and include 6 hours of car travel...thank God it was only a few days. Late in the day, yesterday, we had a successful walk through with the apartment manager (except for a unknown mold stain in the carpet that was under a chair/recliner). They will have to replace the carpet, I hope my Mom doesn't have to pay for that? But the move is now history, and Mom lives is much closer to me, so I can visit more often. So far she is comfortable with the move and is enjoying living with my Uncle and Aunt.

Got called over to the building site. A contractor for the local utility is digging the trench for the gas and electric lines from the right of way to our building. Yippee! When they're done the utility will come plant a pole in the ground and hook up the wires and the gas line. Maybe have power next week so we can finish up the constructiuon. Yippee again!

Not cast related, but it's still burning powder. Warning, Long winded.
Been getting a couple rifles ready for a trip to antelope country in a week or so. I didn't draw a tag, but my Son and my oldest Grandson(12) got doe tags. My Son has been so busy at work that I took over getting the guns ready. This spring he picked up a couple 30-06s for donors, had it planned for a 7X57 and a 6.5X55. One was an old M50 JC Higgins(FN Commercial Mauser action) that had been shoehorned into a cheap tuperware stock. He managed to find a walnut stock for the checkered deluxe version(m51) and we got it fitted and glass bedded. Took some cutting since the Timney trigger takes up more room than the stock trigger. Anyways, we mounted a FXII 4x scope in the supplied rings and gave it a try. Broke the cardinal rule, DON'T SHOOT THE DONOR! Tried about 3 different bullets in the 150-165 range over H4350 and none went over 1.25". Yesterday I swapped the old Vari-x III 2.5-8 off the 2nd rifle to give a little better sighting at longer ranges, groups went to pot. Swapped out to a new 2.5+8 VX3.i and put 3 150 Hornady Interlocks in 3/4". I do believe it's going antelope hunting and that barrel is safe for a few years anyway.
The other rifle is a Kimber 84L Classic Select with darker wood than most and just gorgeous grain structure. He got it used, mainly for the wood, and to go along with his 257 Roberts Classic Select with even nicer wood than this one and a 308 Classic. Doubt it had more than a box of ammo through it, looked like fresh out of the box. We mounted the old Vari-x III 2.5-8 mentioned above in Talley one piece rings and tried it out this spring when he first got it. Wouldn't shoot for shucks, he wasn't too disappointed as it was slated for a 7x57 barrel anyway. It also wouldn't eject the empty brass, we determined that the standing ejector wasn't dropping down into the slot of the bolt head quite far enough and was a bit short anyway. He finally got a new part this week so I put it in and got it working. Just on a whim, I mounted an older Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 I had laying around and tried the 150 gr Hornadys we had loaded for the other gun. Well, strike two on the Don't shoot the donor error. Dang thing easily shoots under an inch. Big problem is the bore is rough and it's a copper mine in there. He'll probably hunt some with it this fall, but 7x57 here we come.
He was wanting to take his 22-250 along for calling coyotes after filling tags so I brought it home to check out. Hadn't been used in years, so I decided to take it apart to double check everything and wipe it down with oil. Couldn't get the barreled action out of the stock. It's a New Haven M70 Classic Fwt. from after they restarted the controlled feed actions again. At some point the bean counters decided that using "hot glue" for a bedding compound would speed production. It was glued alright. Had to get fairly rough but it came out. About half the glue was still on the bottom of the action, the rest in the stock. I got chisels to work and cleaned it out so I could glass bed it . Let the AccraGlass Gel harden for a couple days and gave it a try this morning. Evidently it likes the bedding better than the glue, 50 gr TNT, 55 gr V-Max and 55 Hornady Sp w/cannelure all grouped like a varminter should. It used to be pretty picky, but had a few 3 shot groups this morning approaching 1/2". With the heavy, variable wind I was pretty happy with it. Now if I just had a tag.

Sights seen on Day 1, of our road trip:
Lady at a gas station with nozzle and hose dangling out of her filler pipe, after she drove off without replacing it back in the pump.
Guy pulling a Tracker bass boat with a box-spring, mattress and frame strapped down on the bow. He was driving East on 58, over the Tehachapi's, so could be he was heading to the Colorado River, for a bit of fishing and comfortable outdoor sleeping. Must have been in a hurry, too, as I was doing 80 when he passed me.

I bought a used Bose "Wave" radio this evening.
I've wanted one ever since I listened to the one my girlfriend(at that time) had in her house, that was a decade ago...I just could never fork over the $599 for a new one. I've never really searched the usual places like ebay for a used one, of course there are hundreds of them listed there, and there are dozens of model numbers, of which I had no idea what is what? until I did some research tonight.

Anyway, I seen one listed on a facebook garage sale page and it was located in my town, which is nice, no shipping and I get to try it out before I buy it. It looked like new, even had the manual (dated 2003), but as advertised by the seller, the CD player is wonky, I searched the model, and it seems to be a common problem. Luckily I ain't buy'n it for CDs. I negotiate the price down some, but was still a hefty $110 cash, which is a lot for a 16 year old radio with a Wonky CD player, LOL.

I got it setup, and boy can it pull in the distant AM stations I like to listen to, better than any other radio I own...and I own quite a few. Sound quality is second to none in that size range, IMHO. Bonus, it was made in the USA.

Been saying Prayers for all those poor folks.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Jon, whenever I get the chance with the kids in the car, I tune in the sole remaining AM station we get that isn't sports. I love the looks on their faces! We used to have a local low watt station that had a really, really good Saturday line up. Gone now of course. Had a larger station in Brockville Ont, Ca. that was absolutely dead on for weather. During the Ice Storm of '98 that Canadian station was doing as much for the US side as the Canuck side as far as public service announcements, lining up supplies/firewood/water/ etc. There was NO US side station in our area working for a few days. I guess that was all ancient history, but I for one miss local stations with local talent. I've always wanted a Zenith Trans Oceanic, one of the later ones. I don't know why. I recall seeing them advertised as a kid, maybe thats it. But the $$$ for a good one always stops me.

Man, I thought putting the cheapo pool up was fun. I had no idea I had to take it down too! Now there's some fun. It's all folded up now and when the dripping stops it'll go into the basement. I can't believe it isn't going to be cracked come spring.
