Road courtesy for others, whether it be directed toward motorists or cyclist, is on the wan round here. Now, arrogance, self-centeredness, aggression, irresponsibility, elitism, and me-first attitudes abound.

Unc,
If F-35s are at least as loud as F-22s, they are loud.
I spent four years working on Air Force flight lines and both ends of runways, and the sound of fighter jets still give me goose bumps, but what you are having to endure is very disruptive and not necessary.

heh.
they go round and round and round, usually you can't hear them over the cars and sirens, unless they make a banking turn.

Today, I mounted the snow blade on my ATV. Ya know, I think it may be time for that 16 yr old wheeler to be sent pack'n. I use it so little, it just doesn't seem worth having around, especially if I decide to fix a couple of the little things on it, that need fix'n...needs tires too. I think I'd be better off with a decent quality snowblower instead of that snow pusher. My firewood cutting habits have changed and now I rarely need a ATV...whereas I use to need one most of the time.

Sitting here at work on my break. Planing out Saturdays events. Getting ready to put the bagger on the mower and mow my grass- leaves for the last time. Then arguing with my self over, whether or not to put the kid on the roof to clean out my gutters. He is 14 and he has just started to do physical work for others. Kinda scares me to put him on a roof for the first time. But he has already been up and down ladders, painting for the neighbors already.
Just kinda scares me, that my baby might fall. But he wants to do it. Is 14 too young??? Then again I was laying under jacked up cars and working the tractor, plow, hay wagon and mowers at 14.

he is just as scared of falling as you are of watching it happen.
Its just low crown, almost flat roof and only 12 feet high. But just do not know If I can take him walking around up there, while I am either on the ladder or the ground.:( Had a guy lined up, but when he cancelled my son said he wanted to make the money instead.

The local Best Buy had a countertop microwave my wife liked, so brought it home.

Prior to that, I had appointment with a skin doc and he said the round red spot, that's the size of a dime and on the outside of my right calf, was pre-cancerous. His diagnosis was a surprise, but the "pre" part of it was a relief. He froze it and said to come back in a month.

Your in good shape 462.
The last time the sawbone had his way with me whilst wielding nitrogen, my mug looked like Mike Tyson used it for a punching bag.
His assistant was keeping track of all the freezes on a electronic note pad.
Each arm had more blisters than I can count with all my fingers and toes.
I've tried using a soldering iron, instead of going to the doctor, but they get infected if you burn them too long. And it hurts more.

They fly F-15's at the base in klamath falls. I LOVE hearing them do touch n goes when we go to town.
You used to be able to stop on the bypass and watch as they flew overhead. You could count the rivets.
But, they put up no parking signs. Kill joys.

Mitty38, only you can judge if he's ready. Is he a careful person? Does he understand that with high work you have to plan each and every move before you make it? I had been on the roof helping with the antenna, retrieving Frisbees, hanging Christmas lights by the time I was 14.

462, I had one of those a couple of years ago, about the same place, doc froze it. Went back a month or two later, no problem.

We used to have jets coming here 10-15 years ago. They'd strafe up the valleys usually scaring the beejeebas out of everyone. Must've had enough complaints after awhile cause we rarely see/hear them anymore. Do remember seeing them,BELOW me whilst ripping through the mnts on sportbikes. Used to happen quite frequently and have been extremely close to them.....ehhh. Here's hoping they find a new playground Jimbo.

Mitty, roof and scaffold work is very taxing on your concentration. If you're the type that's always on edge, even moreso. Takes years to get really comfortable so,make sure he is serious about the safety. And limit the time to say 1/2 hour or so at first, build up to longer periods.

My dad(contractor)used to tell of a story when I was around 7 that,if there was a ladder to a roof he would have to tie me to the ground cause he knew I'd be up there faster than a dog on a biscuit. Still am that way, just like being up on scaffolds and roofs?

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I'd say for most boys 14 is plenty old enough. As was said, his fear will be greater than your own. And most importantly, HE WANTS TO WORK! Use that while you can! He'll grow out it soon enough.

I grew up in the central Adirondacks, between Griffiss AFB and Plattsburgh AFB, both since struck from service. We had jet aircraft over us all the time as I understand the topography of the area is much like the topography of eastern Europe/western USSR, oops, I mean Russia. Now I'm maybe 10-15 air miles from Ft Drum with it's helicopters. To me, it's the sound of the boys practicing to protect our freedom. Yeah, afterburners are loud, but no where near as aggravating as the idiot down the road nailing the throttle on his Harley with no muffler at every chance or the guy with the same set up on his pick up. There are probably people who complain about us shooting and such too!

Got the furnace more or less done, for now. I have oil heat if I want it! Only got cut once too. Next major/needs to be done yesterday job is that stupid skid steer. No spark- again! Pain to tear apart and now it's stuck sort of halfway across an alleyway in the barn. It's about 10F here, so that probably won't get done today. I don't think there's anywhere colder to work than on a concrete floor in a drafty barn in winter.

The boys went hunting yesterday afternoon. Saw a couple does and a Red Tailed hawk took a mouse so close to them the oldest said he could have touched with his rifle barrel. All I saw was particularly trusting Cottontail with no fear of old dudes on tractors hauling hay.

You live in the upper Midwest. Ownership of firearms, fishing tackle, and at least one ATV is MANDATORY! Traps, boats, ice fishing shanties, two deep freezers, nearly so. Axes, a forge and anvil, logging chains, binders, a cant hook or peavy, ice tongs, chain hoist, while not mandatory are nice accessories and carry major style points.

Mitty, when I have to work on a roof and don't trust the footing I tie a hay rope to a tree stand harness that I wear and have my wife tie the other end to the ATV or pickup truck. Just don't do what a couple guys from my old home town did.
They tied a safety rope to the roof worker and the ball hitch of the pickup truck. The long rope was over the ridge and the guy was working on the other side. He yells to his buddy that he is out of smokes and would he run to town to the gas station to get hm some. He forgot the tell the guy on the ground to untie the rope from the pickup first. Details can be important.

A couple more shots of the building progress. Carpenters have finished up everything except the drywall inside the office and bath area. Monday morning the HVAC contractor will start work, expect to take 3 days. They have to have furnace ("one or more appliance(s)") hooked up before the county inspector will give OK so I can get gas meter installed. That usually take 2-3 days so if the furnace is hooked up Monday I may get a meter by end of week and can turn on heat over weekend. Once building is at constant temp they can epoxy seal the floor. Once floor is sealed the plumber will put in fixtures, the carpenters can put in drywall, and the electrician's can finish lights and fixtures in bath and office.

Also, once the floor is cured we can start moving the machines over. We have to unhook some of the electrical gear in the current shop, they will reuse all the individual breaker boxes and rotophase 1-to-3 phase convertor.

The contractor we will use to move the machines says to give them about a week's notice, so if we have heat by next weekend and are sure the floor will be sealed the following week we could potentially be unhooking all the machines two weekends from now and be moving two weeks from this monday. Three weeks from now we could be operating out of our new shop!

One thing we decided - once we are out of our current garage shop and it is empty we will use it for welding, grinding, and spray painting the stuff we need to make and fix up, no sense getting the new shop all dirty with grinder dust and overspray. A current hoist that is anchored to the floor over our manual lathe will be raised up on a new base with 8" phenolic swivel casters to be a free rolling gantry crane that won't mark up the new floor. Also plan to build several other special pieces of material transport equipment. I'm an old guy that doesn't plan to lift or carry anything I don't have to.

Been a very long procedure since buying the land and trying to get permits to now and very nearly ready to start up machines in the new place. Congratulations Keith. You gotta be super excited. It sure does look great.

Is the “roof” over the office area strong enough to use for storage?

You are going to have one hell of a nice shop Keith.

Roof is 2 x 8s on 16" centers over a 12' span. Floor of mezzanine will be 3/4 AC plywood with the smooth side up. Don't know what weight limit will be but given space is only 3'-4' high I expect that mostly what we will store up there will be light enough that it could be pushed around by someone on their hands and knees. Plan to buy or build a rolling stairway like you see in the aisleways of the warehouse home improvement stores. There will be heavy duty storage racks for storing heavy materials out in the shop area.
