Down right chilly mowing this a.m.

Practicing in the wind today and it ain't going all that good?

Remembering back 20 years..... my pro shop owner, shooting partner gets a "Techno Hunt" computer.... simulated system. Think golf pro shop but, archery. He was a full line dealer,as such.... mostly compounds. But he didn't have the correct lighting systems in place for "those guys" to see their $$$$ sight systems. So he calls me to shake the system down, knowing being true instinctive,we can shoot in the dark.... and yes,a LOT of good natured jokes about shooting at night....

So anyway, one of the systems bennies was we could dial in wind. Imagine shooting a tackdriver handgun(best comparison for guys that don't shoot arrows) but,you have to aim a solid 12",into the wind @20yds. Well,I got dang good..... shite, reckon so cause I spent days/weeks shooting that dang thing helping him out.

Well,it was still indoors. Get outside, shooting in "real" wind..... just sayin, it takes any confidence you thought you had and sorta stuffs it down your throat, laughing the whole time.

What does this have to do with our cast?

On an arrow,it's F.O.C.

It's the balance point of an arrow expressed as forward of center. Indoors(no wind),we "get away with" less FOC. Outside(real wind) we want more FOC.

But how much?

There in gentleman is what CB guys are leaving on the table. If I told ya,would have to kill ya.... kidding, sort of. It's a self actualization kind of thing. Work on.... your "tune",not on blue bird days but, windy days.

Velocity is a funny thing......

In motorcycle "world",we go uphill faster than downhill. To a car guy, that is so foriegn as to not really make sense. But it's true..... it's a balance thing.

Well, there's the "key" to unlocking the whys of cast velocity that certain "theories" not only miss but, have set back the craft. Man up,and at least try for more velocity whilst testing in real wind.

You don't have much choice other than to practice in windy conditions in a lot of the areas I lived in or hunted within. Wind is an omnipresent fact of life in most deserts.

Ian--this crud seems to be tracking with your experience closely. Better today.

Broken pipe is about a foot away from the trunk and this tree decided it wasn't going to send out a tap root, just surface runners. So yard is hard to mow and can't get to the pipe without cutting at least roots - remaining strong enough to hold it in a storm? Took out 2 huge Arizona ash (lousy trees with boers) and big sweetgum (with the nasty balls) at the other place but that was 25 yrs ago, mind's wiling but the body? Hire somebody. Builders just plat whatever is cheap and easy. City here tried to force some bald cypress - most have pulled them due to the knees in the yard. Live oak is the same, don't get a tap and all surface roots. 40' tree and 5' root ball.
Did get ~100 308W annealed today, did the 30/30 yesterday.

I only load the AA1680 in my 7.62X40WT, but having to fire form each piece of brass makes you go thru a lot of powder.
Wish I could come up with a load that uses 296. Have a bunch of 150 flat point 30-30 bullets and a bunch of 165 Nosler BT, just haven't had time to come up with a good fire form load with these projectiles.

Just because you got to anchor (cheek weld) don't mean you got your eye...... behind the arrow(scope).

Go for 110% "behind the scope" on 3 shot groups..... then, move on to 5.

Just weighed 10 brand new FL sized Starline .308 cases with CCI 200 primers in them. Grabbed 10 out of a new batch of 100. 1.2gr variance. Love Starline brass for the money.

There seems to be some strange, glowing object in the sky this AM. Checked the local news and they claim it's something called "the Sun". Got me, all I know is it's not raining, I'll take what I can get.

Going to try to find some energy today and tackle a project from start to finish. I probably just jinxed myself. Manure bucket for the skidsteer, one of those tined affairs that will enter the winter pack bedding without multiple "back up and slam into it" type attacks. Darn things mount is an inch wide one way and 2 inches narrow another. I can torch it off and weld it back on or I can take it to a guy with a plasma cutter and then weld it back on. My cutting skills are an iffy thing on some days. Flip of the coin. Also have to get a list of parts needed for some haying equipment. Gonna be a lot of stuff to do today, but the Sun is out!

Why fire form 40wt? Should be able to form with bo die.

Because I've been married for 50 years and a long time ago, I learned to do as I'm told!
Just kidding, not.
I form the brass from 5.56 OFB and PPU 223 OFB with a Hornady 7.62x49WT sizing die, but it has to be fire formed to blow the shoulder and body taper out.
The 5.56 has a shoulder that is 23 degrees. The 7.62x40WT has a 30 degree shoulder and less taper to the body.
Fire formed brass has a lager capacity than non fire formed brass by about 1.5 grains.
Non fire formed brass can be loaded to almost the same velocity as fire formed brass, but the fire formed brass is more accurate. I suppose, because it fits the chamber better.

Hawk, understand the reason for fire forming, you must be shooting a bolt or SS. I think the BO or it's 'specials' would make a great levergun cal, something light like the Marlin 39 or 357 weight. Easy to carry and close to 30/30 capability.

Shooting a Rock River AR with a Wilion 16" SS barrel.
Very accurate round.
I wasn't planning on anything suppressed, so I went with the 7.62 for the extra velocity.
Kinda reassessing that now and wanting a suppressed BO.
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence! Haha!

Interesting.... just like mowing the grass, where you get that instant gratification thing going on...

It was today, coming home from a much needed hike/hunt to a "clean" shop. I'm like, holy moly this place looks good.

Somewhere around the early '90's,BMW made a "tank bag" (motorcycle "luggage" that straps over the gas tank) that pretty much raised the bar on fit...function...styling, to levels that basically got retired cause,no one has ever gotten close to them.

They were made in decent numbers so if you look enough, they're still around. Stupid cool.

The BMW shirt I got off ebabe the other day for 1.99$ came in today. This is for my trad bow shooting..... you gotta look good, shoot good, talk all the right chit sorta thing. Dang if the shirt, besides being made in USA isn't the same pattern as those old tank bags.... Martha(Stewart) better get,"on the stick",haha.

Interesting. I use a 18" mcgowan barreled BO upper, just H110. It's tight so I neck turn. Mostly 145gr PB cast @ 2k fps. Do have some SST & Vmax for it as well as 150 SSP. All definitely accurate as I can shoot. Lots of 296/110 here at LGS. With the right mag most everything works. 10" pistol is just a tad louder and few fps slower. Where in n. Tx? DFW for me.

Hawk, if you take a notion to drive down to the Hill Country I can provide the suppressed BLK experience....but be prepared to go home and start writing checks. My shorty AR-15 has cost a lot of people money.

Well whuddayaknow! I actually got a project done, start to finish and as near as I can tell...it works! Yeah, I'll probably get the pattern I made out and eventually get a nicer mount made out of 3/8" mild plate, but for now the 1/4" mount looks like it will work okay. Doesn't tip as far back at ground level as I'd like, but considering it wasn't made for a skid steer in the first place I'm okay with that.

Gotterdone! :)
