It was 70F with a light breeze this afternoon, perfect working weather. Just got going good for about an hour cutting the ditch and suddenly lost the drive power on the right wheels.....and noticed my pants leg was warm on the back from hydraulic fluid. Busted a hose, 20 minutes before the only place in town that could make one closed. I would have called it in over the phone and run in to pick it up, but it's some special snowflake with a steel tube in the middle that has about seventeen bends. It will get replaced with a run of hose instead, tied down where it needs to be.

woke up to about 3"s of new snow this morning.
I didn't want to wake up at 4:30 but someone [about 20"s tall with black and orange stripes] was rummaging through the trash can in the kitchen and someone else [about 12"s tall and silver] wanted to go down and join in.
there was no going back to sleep either way.

more like a part time tiger striped Tasmanian devil.
I guess rummage was the wrong word, she was shaking the can around like a play rope banging it into everything.
this is Jax's new thing this week.

The tooling to make wooden arrows is pretty neat. Made a set for 23/64"... spits out 3 arrows at a time. It was nice because whenever we'd do a mill job with cedar or fir, would always find the straightest grain stock and make a 100. Shot, and still shoot woodys. They are even prettier than the aluminum or carbons because of shaft colour possibilities.

They SUCK in the rain though. And we don't have the sense to get out of it so,whatcha gonna do?

We got to a lot of historic places.Been taking the shopdog.... one of the reasons to have her. Anyway, most have "leash laws".... we're working on a way to circumvent them? So,technically she "IS" on a leash..... right proud of herself.20181117_131523_resized.jpg

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Cows kept getting out. Youngest boy and I patrolled the fence line trying to find the problem spot. Got that fixed, I hope. Wrong time of year to be fencing. Got some more wood cut and into the basement. I both curse and am thankful for the vast amount of standing dead elm I have here. Decent firewood, nasty to split if you don't have a splitter, always seems to grow in a prickly ash patch and always seems to fall on my fences. They also seem to go from healthy to dead with the bark falling off in about 3 months. I'm sure it's well over a year in reality, but it sure seems they go real fast. I also have scads and scads of near usless grey birch that grows in clumps and never gets more than 4-6" through. You lop it off on the bottom and we run it through an old style belt driven buzzsaw. It would kill you to try to piece that stuff up with a chainsaw, buzz saw is just the ticket. Also have a lot of other stuff to fall and pile for next year. Gonna be busy.

Haven't put chains on the tractors yet, got that to do. Still need to get the rams off my little JD420 crawler and out for rebuild. Just need time and my body to co-operate. Have to load and drop off 2 Katahdin rams (sheep) to a guy early this week and we have family coming for the holiday. Have had people stopping by looking to buy hay. I've got enough to last me from Dec-late April- but we're already feeding it out! So looks like I'm going to be short again unless we get a thaw and I can get the stock back out on pasture. It was a weird year for hay. We got all the first cut done by the first week of July, which is by far the earliest I've ever had it done by at least a month. Then we waited n the rain for 2nd cut. Nuthin' till the middle/late August IIRC and then the rain wouldn't stop. So we only got 1/4 of the 2nd cut we should have. Different equipment (FASTER!) would make a difference, but you still need sunshine to dry the hay.

Starting to get ready for Thanksgiving at my house. We've had it at our house since we moved here in 1991.
Will have 44 people, if everyone comes. We expect about 30, a few are going out of town to their in-laws. Both sides of our family, everyone's, related. Cousins, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, great nieces and great nephews. My mother is the only one older than me.
The rest of the parents and grandparents are gone.
Scary part is, I'm now the Patriarch of the family. Don't feel old, except when I try to work all day and now have to stop for breaks.
We provide the turkey and dressing, everyone else brings a dish. It's great, cause everyone brings their best dish.
Eat around 2:30, then settle in for the football game at 3:30.
Should be nice outside. The women gravitate to the patio to talk and the men watch the game.

We'll have four this year, counting the baby. We have to get busy on another one, both sides of our family are about to die out.

My wife always had only her parents and two sisters and a brother, just 6 of them, ever. No extended family at all.
It was a real shock when she came to the first family Christmas on my side. My grandfather had 12 brothers and sisters, my grandmother had 4 brothers and sisters. Not all of them came or were invited, but it was a big group! My wife had never been to a family gathering like that before.
We've always lived in the same town. All of my grandparents and their families were all born in this town. The whole family still lives within 20 miles of each other.

We will have myself, my wife and daughter, my parents, and the in laws. If he wasn’t out of the country my older brother would likely be here too.
That is plenty for me.

We do Thanksgiving and Mother's Day at my house each year.
Mother's Day is all me. We started that in 1983.
Three packer size briskets, 15# of sausage, potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, baked beans, home made BBQ sauce and banana pudding.
We usually have about 45-50 people.
Comfort food, not weight watcher approved.

AFAIK, Marie and I will be going to Chula Vista for Thanksgiving Day at her sister's place. Sister's husband is a great guy, with 2 stalwart sons whose company I really enjoy. Dunno if the boys will be there or not. Our girls are all unable to attend, but will be here for Christmas.

I am genuinely thankful this holiday for what appears to be restoration of my good health. This past year or so has been problematic, and Marie has worked her aspirations off taking care of me.

I think I will be the one cooking the Turkey this year.
probably be the one doing the sweet potatoes too.
I might just short boil and then fry the tatoes in a little cinnamon-sugar sauce, or cooking shredding then pureeing them with a little hot pepper sauce then topped with marshmallows and back in the oven for a little surprise.

probably short cook the turkey, let it rest for an hour, then hit the smoker for 2 hours to finish it off.

If you shoot a buck south to north below the tailpipe with a .358 Win 250 Hornady RN it makes an awful mess. Slowed him up from getting into beech brush and then made a raking shot to anchor him. Paunch soup, just dump all the insides out as liquid. I have a tender stomach for smells, it was memorable. Large body, small rack.

My mother and father have been gone for some time. Sister? Well, can't say something nice, so I'll leave that alone. Mrs. smokeywolf's dad is long gone and her mom is a joy to have around, but sadly, lives in Japan.
My oldest son lives in MO, so it will be just Mom and I, college boy and the youngest. Oh, and this will be Tasha the puppy's first Thanksgiving.
Sure do miss Timber.

I'll smoke a smallish turkey, plus a duck. I'll also make the dressing.

Do you really want to hang with those that plan flooding in their home

So long as, I'm not asked to- do unethical tasks, help defraud anyone, & our estimate is ok'd, I don't judge.;)

Some problems are solved, in part, by scheduling a controlled flood. Sometimes it has to get worse before better.
