Some Work long over due!

Not much real work at my studio this week so spending my time at home & finally getting to projects over due!
I had 300 pieces of 30-30 brass that has gone through my Savage 340 about 10 times with only neck sizing. The last time they were fired last summer they loaded with a good bit of resistance! So I put them on the side for re-annealing and FL sizing! ( not my favorite thing to do!)
So today I tackeled the project.....Annealing and then FL resizing getting the shoulders close to where the need to be and the lower part of the case closer to factory spec. Now I should get another 10 x of shooting with these cases with only neck sizing , shooting in "low node" in my Savage 340.
Now that the hard work is over and they are vibrating in Walnut hulls to make them pretty I'm happy I did the deed!

I need to get my 340 out soon. What is your favorite plain base Bullet for that rifle Jim?

waco,
I love the ranch dog ( regular lube groove) bullet from NOE 165 gr. Since i now PC coat I prefer the gas checked bullet without the check & pc'd
That is the most accurate for me in "Low Node" !
Here is my best target shot at 50 yards with 6 gr American Select: COL 2.462" Smoke's Clear PC
5 shots into 3/8 in c to c

Boy howdy, that is a hell of a great group. I have to spend some time with the 340 this summer, too.

Too many simultaneous projects...

Dang Jim!
Very nice. I have that same mold. Never tried it without gas checks. Never used American select. About what velocity?

Jim,

I remember us talking about bedding that rifle.
Looks like you hit a home run on this one.

Not sure what Jim does, but I use a Vertex Bench Source machine. I believe Fiver has the same unit. I love mine.

I agree, but I can't spring for the $550.00 for that unit.
Was hoping someone has an cheaper way that works well.

Dim light in the bathroom right outside the loading room. 3" of water in the sink, Bernz-o-matic torch with a low flame. Hold the case head in my fingers between thumb and fore finger with a little back up from middle finger. Rotate the case neck smoothly back ad forth. The instant I start to see any glow at the very case mouth I drop it in the sink. I just did 655 25-20s in Feb. Longer cases are a snap, but it did toughen up those finger tips a bit. I posted a video on a Face Book cast bullet site and was told I was wasting my time. Baloney, this has worked every time for 40-70, 45-70, 30-06, 7x57, 30-40 Krag, 25-20, 32-20 to make .310 Greener. I get excellent workable brass with no splitting.

As For Annealing L Ross just let you know my simple system is as above!
Also if you want to work in normal room lights Just do the same finger spin on the case head ( I hold it about 1/3 way up) and when you can't take the heat on your fingers drop in water.
I have found that these two methods are virtually identical! And I use both methods off and on Just remember if you are doing it in a darkened room ....yes you will just start to see a glow then drop in water......... However if you are doing it the second way in the normal light ; you never want to see a red glow because you will have gone too far! Just trust you fingers ....feel the burn drop in water.
I like to play the flame on the junction of the neck and shoulder because this seems to let the neck heat more even.
Never needed special machines & have been doing it this way for many years. with practice it is very duplicatable
Since I shoot light loads and never crimp any cartridges ( I'm only shooting paper) seldom do I ever see a split neck! I shoot the cases about 10 times and then do it again.

waco,
That load is roughly 1100 fps out of my rifle That target was shot with a top mounted scope. The mount is only held by 3 screws all in the front of the receiver ( 340 has a split rear receiver) The scope was 24 power and at 50 yards it wasn't hard to prove the 340 in 30-30 can be a very accurate rifle. I have since removed the scope mount and went back to using receiver sights! Now I know the rifle is accurate I now like to test my skills at shooting it with metal sights

Ben,
Yes I glass bedded my Savage 340's action except for the extreme rear are ( on your suggestion from experience with Savage action bedding)
I removed the barrel band and free floated the barrel down to 1" before the barrel nut. That area is bedded with the action.
&Yes only one action screw secures the action to the glass bedded stock. Since I do not have the barrel band anymore I inlet a chunk of lead into the forestock mortice to increase the weight for benchrest shooting.

Here is my thread which has the barrel bedding I did ( wish I had put that in the projects section)

Thank you but I think in this case it is the rifle! Easy to hold on a 3/8" POA at 24 x @ 50 yds as long as the rifle is doing it's thing! And that is all I needed to know so off came the scope and back came the receiver sights with the Lyman 17 front globe with a small lee shaver aperture!
So now it is up to me to duplicate those targets;)
