Springfield 840

Have to admit to being a fan of the Savage 340 series rifles. Had to go to Menards today, so dropped by an LGS, there is the used rack is a real nice, clean Springfield 840 in .30-30 for $299.

I really don't need this but am tempted. The other one in .30-30 I have has the Sears name on it, but it's a good shooter with cast, maybe not a tack driver, but consistently good and not picky.

Too many that don't get shot much now.

Didn't think to check if this one was drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. It was for a side scope. Been kind of thinking about my other one that it would be better with sights than a scope and it is not drilled for a peep site.

Yeah, that's about the lowest I've seen one go for in quite a while. In fact, it's about what I paid for mine about 12 years ago.

I should probably go back and buy it, might not ever get to it, but they are neat little rifles and a guy could do a lot worse for woods deer hunting.

I bought a 340A in .30-30 some years ago. It's old enough to not have been drilled and tapped for a scope mount and is fitted with a Lyman 40? receiver sight. The stock was cracked along the left action wall and had been repaired, kind of. I re-repaired it, stripped the wood and bedded the recoil lug and a couple inches of barrel. I got extra busy with farm work and family things, set it back and didn't go any further. For a few years, I barely fired a round, other than a couple of deer and the odd fox or coyote. Anyway, the 340 appeared from the depths of the project wall. My 9yr old grandson and I did a little shooting this past weekend and he's ready to start with mild loads in a centerfire, likely a Contender carbine, maybe one of the straight stocked 336's in .30-30. I loaded some extra for the 340. It's about time I found out how it shoots! Hopefully next weekend...
