So am thinking of playing around with some 223 in a handi rifle that I have never
been able to shoot with any accuracy using cast.
Lyman 225646
cci primer
IMR SR4769 10 grains
Lyman book says 8.5 to11.5 grains.

Use Dacron filler?
Do not use Dacron filler?

Good or bad?

Sorry the 1 finger typing gets me in trouble sometimes.
It is IMR SR 4759 not 4769.

rodmkr,
Same here ! My 223 Rem Sportsman 78 shoots cast great but the Handi is still a work in progress. I even have a 24 x scope on it and only shoot 50 yds! One thing I can tell you Shooting from the bench place your front bag as close to the receiver as possible. That helps a lot! If you place it on the forearm they will be all over the place! Try to set your bench up so when you open the breech the barrel drops but the rear stock stays close to shooting position That is do not let the rear stock drop to eject Let the barrel drop! Sound hard but it isn't but you need to elevate you bench bags.
I also broke the "lead" into the chamber with a dowel sharpened in a pencil sharpener spun up in a hand drill with so white diamond compound ( I can thank Ian for that trick) All of this helps to reduce the fliers somewhat and weigh your bullet to to .1 grain and weigh each charge. If you are shooting light loads like I do I do use Pistol primers instead of SR primers
Light loads seem to like Unique and American Select

The 646 is a great bullet. I'd use 2400 or even something like Unique unless you're looking for a barn-burning load.

Thanks everyone.
Ian,
I like the 646 bullet and have tried several different powders.
Have 16 lbs of the SR4759 and wanted to give it a try as it doesn't seem to work well for
me in anything else.

Hawk,
Pretty much but I purchased the lot before it was discontinued.
and have never had much of a use for it as it didn't work on any of the
cartridges I bought it for, at least for me anyway. It works great for some
but never did for me.

4756 was also dropped . Pity it was a real go getter in 1-1/16 oz 12 ga steel loads knocking on 1500 fps .

And the other Sporting Rifle powder 7625. One of the best for 32 ACP, 32 Long WC and the old black powder revolver cartridges for light target loads.
