Stupid gas block

It won't come off!! SLA adjustable (for a dimples barrel but this one isn't dimpled) on a heavy pistol barrel. Heat, cold, solvent - nothing. Pulled the barrel this morning (I want to change the handguard), tried to pull the gas tube so I can bang on it better. Tube stuck too. Freezer time, next thought is diamond disk o the dremel.

Propane torch and a brass drift would have been my approach since you have the barrel off, but I guess that didn't work. De plus gros Marteau? 9mm case on a steel punch makes an expedient brass drift.

I'd probably just get a new upper and save this one for magazine dumps at the range during the deer season sight in week.

If there are no set screws or roll pins it might be held on with the Green Loctite. CLE uses that stuff and it is just about permanent.

I installed it just push on then. Got the G.T. out, have a home made barrel vice (2 2x4 with hole) around here someplace. Suspect a bur someplace (other than my hiny). Got a brace for it, handguard (not the cheepy thing on it now) & a decent holo sight. Gonna be my close range pig gun with supers.

I can see a burr from the grub screws stopping it coming off but not locking it solidly in place.

On one of our carbines this happened. Here's what worked.

I put a hardwood block with a hole on each side on the chamber side of the gb & another on the muzzle. Connected them with bolts, just as light to moderate wrench tightening was observed, tap all around on the gb with a brass hammer....pop...just like a brake drum, it's loose.

On a friend's rifle after the press was acquired..
Put in the shop press, light pressure..tap all around... increase pressure...tap....pop.
This is how ak trunions are done & they require way more pressure on & off.

Might could use a two jaw on a pistol but I'd use hardwood on the muzzle & soft wood on the press end.

My gear pullers have short arms. Been in the freezer for a day but ordered a replacement today. Placed muzzle down in my Lee press with hard rubber block, use hammer to hit open end wrench on the GB. Try again tomorrow, no worky and I'll cut it off. It's a Syrac ord, not SLA. I like the clamp on to eliminate this kind of problem but they are pricy now. Eventually I'll get it.

Careful 15 min with diamond dremel, it's off. Interesting - leaded at the port!! Actually didn't cut all the way through to block, just enough to remove tension. Weld job would fix it. Couldn't get enough of the vinegar/peroxide mix in the spot to remove the lead.

Doh! And none of us thought of that. Glad you got it figured out, the leading thing is really good to know.

Note to self - next time mount the gas block by it's self FIRST! Gas tube makes a nice stiff lever, forces the space - no way you can tighten the screw to overcome the 'lever'. This is pistol gas so the block sees much higher pressure than carbine or rifle length. Leading was ~ 1/32"(guess?) thick in a fan toward the receiver so the block tilted and leaked. Port itself isn't plugged. Details, details.
Funny, this was supposed to be a cheap tinker/play-toy from some gifted/left-over parts, used the carbine BCG, got a barrel. Has changed to a real shooter, with some junk parts left over. Darned hobby!

All put together, no holds and 1 dove for me and 2 for him. Put a CMC trigger in his rra 222, he likes. Put a 3x Nikon on the pistol. Got it on paper at 100, 2 touching rest on the 4x4 is ok.

Yes, got it for a good $, nikon tactical rings worked good too. On the BO pistol with 125-150gr @ 100 had to adjust vert a lot as it is factory 223. I found Nikon glass to be very good, only non-nikon I have now is the buckmaster on the 30/30. It's a 1/4 MOA click and fine hairs. The sightmark holo was screwy, locked onto the rail good and hard but the sight itself wiggled! Was good (IIRC) on the 308W several years ago. Couldn't get a 5 yd zero so off the the store 50 mi away! He wanted the trigger after trying my pistol trig, one shop had it, then off to academy for the scope. I'm still recovering from the trip - lots of walking, cold and eliminating a lot of H2O. She's to get in from Co late tonite from a trip with the church gals (6 in a van - glad it's not me), so I'll be up real late. Picked up the dog from kids yesterday, she slept good but wanted to find Mom this morning and I wasn't ready to get up.
Dang I'm long winded this morning!
