The Ideal Cast Bullet Rifle

heck man, drift is when things get good.
stories and pictures are better, I mean your bear story was right on point for the thread actually.
it was pointing out that the 25-20 is probably not the ideal grizzly bear rifle.
now it's possible the O.P. was possibly thinking on Grizzly hunting with his grandpa's old 25-20 and was looking for the perfect cast bullet rifle for allround use.
now he knows that maybe he needs to look at the 32-20 and not the 25-20 for that task.

having said that I have read several in the back of the magazines ad's from when Marlin first started marketing the 25-20 rifles in like 1909 or so,,, and their advertising would have you believing that the 25-20 is big enough for just about anything with 4 legs.

Think I posted somewhere here about the Seeley Lake, Montana, lady who killed ol' Griz with a Ruger 10/22.
We used to own property there, I subscribed to the local paper, and it printed the initial story and ran updates till the feds finally realized the futility and stupidity of their case against her.

I read somewhere that the «largest grizzly»- record was held for many years by a native american woman, who shot it in self-defense. With a single- shot .22lr. Maybe I can find the photo.

Just roll with it. Hey....is that a squirrel? The rest of the time, some of the most interesting stuff to read comes along page 3+ when it's wandered a bit. The OP can always bring it back around if they want.
Yes Sir!!

Elmer Keith told about an African Safari where they were sleeping in huts on posts and were awakened one night by an elephant tat walked under it and was rubbing hard enough against the posts that they were afraid the hut would collapse . Don't remember who he said it was but someone shot a round from a Colt Woodsman thru the floor to scare it off . Said seemed that was enough to scare the Elephant off as the rubbing quit immediately and they had no further trouble that night . When they got up the next morning they found the elephant dead under the hut from one .22 round .

Don't get me started or I'll get going on the bear that got trapped inside my cabin and ate 10 pounds of rolled oats on top of my kitchen counter, then proceed to tear my cabin apart. Besides that all these guys here have stories, I'm just being lazy trying to get out of working on the projects that need to get done..
I've already hijacked Rockydoc's thread to much..
John G, don’t worry about hijacking The thread, you are enriching it. Stories about experiences with “ideal cast bullet rifles” are welcome!

Thanks Rocky for the kind words.
I might just have to tell about the time a small black crashed through a side window of my cabin then crashed through my front window on the way out. All taking place without hitting the floor and within a blink of an eye. Glad bears aren't around in the winter..
Or the time I was sleeping on the deck waiting for the bear that tore my place up.
Or the time (I was sleeping again) my girlfriends roommate woke me up about the bear trying to come in the front door.
Or coming home to find a muddy bear print sliding down the kitchen window.
Then there was the bear the my dog had run up a tree and I was in my boxer shorts.
Your going to get me remembering stuff.

Or the (first day) time when I walked my future wife home and didn't take my gun. And needed it.
Or the time I stabbed my future wife.
Or the time........... Well you got lucky, I can't remember.. I'm sure there's more.

I have just ordered a new Ruger #1 Stainless 30-30 Win. So, I got a lever action, sorta.

I found a good waffle top Marlin 35 Remington at a reasonable price, but it was not drilled and tapped for a scope and I hated to mess up what may become a collectable. I may get one yet.

I already have plenty of guns that will do to shoot anything I need to shoot, we don't always need the guns we buy, but we always want the guns we buy.

May become collectible? I don’t own collectibles, I own shootables

Despite my 03 FFL labeling me as a collector, all my guns are shooters as well.
However, the S&W/Lew Horton 3" Model 24 and 6 1/2" Model 624 have decided to take up residence in the safe. I may talk them out of their home, particularly if I can't find a reasonably priced .44 Special Blackhawk.

Anyway, the guns I consider to be true collectors are priced well beyond my means to buy them.

Strawhat, read somewhere that one smith was doing conversions using the Swdish mauser actions in 458x2" and getting great accuracy. However if you are serious about the 458x2" on a Swedish action I may have a solution to your needs or wants. I have a Ruger #3 barrel in 45/70 in pretty decent shape and since I'll never use it, it's yours for the cost of shipping. I'd have to dig it out and see what shape it's in regarding sights. Don't remember if it still has the Ruger sights on it. Like I said if you want it,it's yours. I'm pretty sure the barrel can be reworked to fit the swede action. Frank

What about the 7.62x54r cartridge?. while not a woods friendly rifle, I have a Finn model 27 that will do 2" at 100 yds. That's about as good as I can do with my eyes. Have a 1944 Russian M44 carbine that would probably make a dandy woods rifle. In the Model 27 I use lyman's 314299 sized to 3135 and 20 grains IMR 4759 with Win LR primer and Hanson Cartridge cases. But do have a couple of 30-06's I'd love to try out with cast bullets. Bet my Sako 75 Hunter in 30-06 would do very well with cast bullets. Does well with 165 grain Nosler Ballistic tips under some IMR 4350. All the local ranges are closed due to the virus. Does anyone have any favorite heavy cast bullet recommendations?. Have an old Krag that had been semi sporterized plus a 1903A3 that will most likely see some cast bullets as well. 30-30 I have at least 3 Win 94's and one nice Marlin 336 as well. And if and when I get to it, will have the model 54 action I've been saving for years barreled and set in a Win Marksman stock. Already factory D&T for both scope and irons. Had the bolt handle done years ago. Just rambling here so bear with me. And would really like to get my hands on a nice remington 788 in 30-30 which could set me up until they shovel the dirt over me. Frank

Spindrift, Sakp 75 Hunter wood stock with detachable magazine. Has a Leupold 4.5x14 on it. And they don't make that model anymore. heavy cast bullet to my mind would be about 200 grains plus or minus. Don't hunt anymore so target only. Sorry it took so long to respond to your post. Frank

Ideal sold to Marlin in 1912; Marlin went broke trying to make machineguns for WW1 in 1916; guy name Phillps (?) bought the rest of the stock and peddled it through 1927. Lyman brothers bought what was left, rights and fixtures in 1927.
