Bingo.

If you find a bona-fide cast bullet expert, let me know because I want to spend about a year being their shadow. Most of us just find what works and go with it.

Who was the data miner guy at the other site that declared himself an expert in all things cast and then crowned himself King of Cast? Seems the King was deposed rather quickly. I maintain an expert is someone who doesn't know that he doesn't know what he doesn't know!

You mean the self-proclaimed know-it-all with the personality akin to an un-muffled logging saw combined with napalm and hydrochloric acid who now dominates another well-known but fairly low-traffic cast bullet forum? Yeah, I know the guy. He won't come here because he doesn't co-mingle with the proletariat.

not just a particular gun.
I spent the better part of a week working over a lyman 4 cavity 429667 mold getting it up from nearly 428 to the 430 I need.
luckily I don't have a marlin needing 434 or something equally as silly.
had powder coating been in my pocket at the time I would

Nope. As far as I'm concerned groove diameter is a useless statistic for cast because I fit bullets to the throat, not the barrel.

Spot on Ian!
If I matched the groove on any of my mil surps I would scrap them a ong ago!

The rule is for cast ....Fit The Throat not the Bore!
If you guys remember that you will be successful Mil Sups Shooters!

None of my rifles: Mil surps or commercial rifles shoot a cast bullet that fits the bore...... NONE!
With the advent of PC coating I now can drop it back a thousandth or so but it still is over bore size!

Except where you're facing such an extreme that that the bullet is disfigured ....... I don't think it is practical to take a .301 down to 284 and expect anything . Or where the dia exceeds what will fit in the case .

see... that's where design and strength come in.
old school way works at lower and quite often into the gas checks are the new thing and we get to here next speeds.
if your able to make it across that big funnel section without riveting and straight into the barrel you can think your way around having to size a 30 cal bullet down to 292 or so.

Forgot to mention ....Some battle rifles need to have the case necks turned so that the case fits the chamber when using an over size bullet.
On my type 38, I turn the necks down to .009" to accommodate the bullet

My Type 38 carbine is my favorite even over my type 99. Probably because my great uncle brought it home in his duffle bag from the WWII Pacific Theatre and never fired it.

I have used PPU brass to bring it back to life!

Joe Brenner.
if I'd known he WAS writing a book.

And 2 years later I find this post. Yeah, that was the guy. The one that said variables didn't matter at all and then went about conducting a test showing that variables matter, just like I told him. Of course, I didn't write a book claiming to be an experty expert, so what do I know? ;)
